Diplomacy Review for PC - Gaming Age
For those unfamiliar with it, Diplomacy is a board game that incorporates secretive movement, discussions with other players, and a shunning of random chance.
For that, Diplomacy is an admirable attempt at recreating the cloak-and-dagger politics of the pre-World War I era.
All of which that is in the board game is in the PC game.

The game board really looks like a board that you would lay out on your dining room table (with the addition of some simple water effects), and the pieces look as if they had just been snipped off of their sprues.
Diplomacy is a turn-based strategy game in the same vein as Risk, but instead of leaving the negotiations in the players’ hands, this game comes up with a whole set of very intricate rules that streamline the diplomacy process.
Diplomacy is strictly an adaptation of the classic board game, so there are no real alternative setups or options for you to tweak the rules with.

When you are convinced you are playing a symmetrical game with the AI it helps the players to develop a "theory of mind" regarding his or her opponents, which helps immensely in immersing the player in the gameplay.
Diplomacy is a very symmetrical game and minimizing the difference between playing with other humans and playing with computer opponents is a cornerstone in our design.

Diplomacy is the PC remake of the 20 year old board game.
The board game is very social, and while it was a great way to do it, the PC version takes much of that social aspect away in exchange for the ease of talking with others — and you can even play against folks who don’t speak your language, which is nice.
The board is a 3D representation of a 2D space, and while you can fully rotate and zoom, there’s not much excuse for anything less than instant feedback on your visual manipulation of the map.

Diplomacy for PC Review - PC Diplomacy Review
The original incarnation of Diplomacy is regarded as one of the greatest strategy board games ever made, and as a result, it has been translated to the computer on several occasions.
Diplomacy's order system is a bit confusing at first, because you have to learn to not only plot your own moves, but also juggle multiple negotiations with other countries so that you can plot out those proposed moves.
Diplomacy also suffers from some annoyingly long load times, which is surprising for a game that takes up a fraction of the disk space of other, modern games.

The game is set up so that no one can invade their neighbor on the first turn, so you'll need to build crucial allies the first time around in order to defend yourself against invasions in the second turn, and make well-coordinated strikes against your opponents.
This game relies totally upon your ability to be able to work within the various plans of your allies and enemies, to be able to recognize when to ally with certain people and to be able to recognize when that alliance is no longer needed.

The mechanics of the game are very simple, as in chess, but the strategy is difficult to understand.

The game world itself consists of 3D versions of the game's playing pieces placed upon a flat 2D version of the map, all of which can be rotated in 3D space to allow for looking at the map and pieces from any angle.
The recurring theme of the game design seems to be that there was simply too much time spent on certain aspects, while a criminally small amount of time was spent on others.

 IGN: Diplomacy Review
Six years ago, Hasbro released a PC version of Diplomacy that was uninspired, managing to reproduce the mechanics of the game without ever really capturing the essence of human interactions that separate Diplomacy from more mechanical games like chess or checkers.
Though it manages to offer a more polished presentation, the overall weakness of the AI and the inconsistency in the multiplayer interface keep the game far short of an attractive alternative to the board game.
Diplomacy is a game of decisions rather than dice, so the psychological elements are key to recreating the experience.
