His father, Jasper van Baburen (d ?1599), had been in the service of Geertruijd van Bronckhorst van Battenburg, Baroness (vrijvrouw) of Vianen, Viscountess (burggravin) of Utrecht, and thus Dirck must have received a better than average education, a fact at least partially confirmed by the innovative and often literary nature of his subject-matter.
Van Baburen probably left for Italy shortly after 1611, for a document rediscovered in the late 1980s records a signed and dated altarpiece of the Martyrdom of St Sebastian (1615; untraced), executed for a church in Parma.
In 1619 and the spring of 1620 van Baburen and de Haen were recorded as living in the same house in the Roman parish of S Andrea delle Fratte.

Dutch painter (original name Theodor Baburen) who was a leading member of the Utrecht school, which was influenced by the dramatic chiaroscuro style of the Italian painter Caravaggio.
Baburen was especially fond of genre scenes (subjects from everyday life), such as The Procuress (1622; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).
A certain coarseness in conception, irregular compositional rhythms, and less atmospheric quality distinguish Baburen's art from that of his greater contemporaries, but his manner of painting can be said to be broad and forceful.

Dirck van Baburen is one of the earliest and most famous of the so-called "Utrecht Caravaggisti," artists from Utrecht who traveled to Rome and responded to the revolutionary work of Caravaggio.
From Caravaggio, Barburen learned how to stage his story with dramatic lighting and to describe his characters with humble and unidealized qualities, including the dirty bare feet shown so prominently by the rabbi at the right.
Though he painted mainly religious subjects, Baburen also created scenes of ordinary life on occasion.

The latter seems to have been part of Vermeer van Delft's stock in trade and appears as such in two of his paintings.
The fact that Vermeer van Delft was a dealer and thus owned a number of works by other masters does not necessarily imply that he took them as models for his own productions; even if he used some of them as background decorations in his paintings.
