 dire straits
The first album, Dire Straits (1978), sold rapidly with groovy songs like "sultans of swing", "down to waterline" and "six blade knife".A fantastic first effort, it laid to the foundation for what was to come.
Dire Straits has a unique sound, drawn from a lot of different music source like rock’n’roll, country, and Knopfler’s native Celtic music, combined with his Dylanesque vocal delivery style and his magical bluesy finger-picked guitar riffs woven around Illsely’s steady bass guitar-work.
For all their popularity and success, Dire straits were rather low profile, preferring to let the quality of the music and its sleek production speak for them rather than too much of publicity.

By the mid-'80s Dire Straits were a platinum band dismissed in their native England as safe, yuppie rockers, yet the original quartet's lean, guitar-driven music struggled to find a label home when first recorded in 1978.
Dire Straits however kept pub rock the way it originaly was and added some pop elements to it and hence created one of the most popular Pop/Rock outfits of the 70s and 80s.
Dire Straits would later go on to make more hardrocker mainstream albums which would be just as good as this one, but none of them would sound as fresh or as original as this one.

If anything, Dire Straits were one of the few bands of the late Seventies/early Eighties proved that the "old school" of music-making was still vital despite any of the prog or punk or New Wave or synth-pop tendencies of the time.
Dire Straits' debut album is a total gas, and one of my personal favourites of all time; with distinct and clear melodies, beautiful lyrics, and breathtaking minimalistic guitar lines, it still stands as the band's absolute peak that they hardly ever managed to top.
The album didn't make the band any new friends, and the old ones sure dug it; but those who'd expected that Mark and his lads were there to save rock'n'roll or anything, with their novel attitude, cynicism and impressive playing, proved themselves mighty wrong.

Though a decade is a significant span of time, Dire Straits had released just two subsequent albums -- 1991's On Every Street and 1993's On the Night, a live album culled from tapes of the record's supporting tour.
Not quite enough material for a new greatest-hits album, but it had been years since Dire Straits had released an album of any sort (a compilation of BBC sessions snuck into the stores in 1995) -- hence the birth of Sultans of Swing.
