ADA-8XR Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Applications
When the DSD I/O Module is used in conjunction with a PCM digital I/O Module (for example an AES3 I/O Module) it becomes possible to perform direct digital PCM to DSD and DSD to PCM conversion at any of the ADA-8XR supported sample rates.
Path 1 is configured for analogue to DSD conversion, the DSD output appears on the MAC-DSD interface and the Path is synchronized to the MAC-DSD interface.
Path 1 is configured for PCM to DSD conversion using an additional PCM-type digital I/O Module (for example an AES3 I/O Module); the Path is synchronized to the PCM I/O Module input using automatic channel selection and follows the sample rate of the PCM data.

Digital Sucks   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Digital has the ability to reproduce simple sine waves quite well, but more complex and textured wave forms must necessarily be simplified and smoothed out somewhat by the conversion processes, and, ultimately, not enough data is being saved at the currently-popular sample rates to ensure detailed reproduction of real-world audio.
Digital, on the other hand, is kind of like looking at a computer screen made up of a coarse mosaic of LEDs that present you with a reconstructed, scanned image of the original object.
The digital version might appear that he has a thumb, two normal fingers, and then one thick finger; or it might even appear as a thumb and a rounded, mushy blob instead of four distinct fingers; and it will probably shift rapidly between different distorted states as he waves his hand around.

But these analog formats (vinyl or tape) are either too big or too expensive to access these high-quality specifications in domestic use, and they are quickly subject to unavoidable and permanent deteriorations.
As a result, audio engineers have worked hard to define a new digital format : to cover the frequency range of the best analog tape machine, the frequency response should be flat to near 100kHz and slowly roll off at higher frequencies.
The 2 companies (Philips and Sony) which did so much in multibit PCM technology for digital audio have consequently decided to move away from multibit in order to reach an even 'higher' resolution.

Providing an unrivaled level of sonic quality, DSD® encoding is destined to serve as the foundation for digital audio in the future.
While traditional PCM processing degrades and compromises quality through the use of multiple filters, Direct Stream Digital® processing eliminates excessive filtration, simplifying the sound capture process and allowing a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly.
Direct Stream Digital® processing is dramatically different — even when compared to the most sophisticated PCM technology.

 Digital Signal Sources
Digital signal sources must be fed thru Digital To Analog Converters then to linear analog amplifiers in order to be heard on a loudspeaker.
Pure digital amplifiers break thru this last remaining weak link in the audio signal chain and make it possible to keep the audio in a digital state all the way thru the amplifier.
It is very important for "Digital" radio receivers to be equipped with either a Pure Digital Power Amplifier or at the minimum a digital audio output so that consumers will not be closed out using the receiver as a digital signal source for their pure digital audio system.

DSD was chosen as the encoding format for SACD because of its more transparent and musical quality over standard PCM, even at high sampling rates.
Use of DSD encoding avoids the multiple stages of filtering and decimation that is inherent in PCM encoding.
DSD encoding eliminates aliasing filters and decimation digital filters in the recording studio, as well as interpolation digital filters in playback.

DSD Analog Input Chain Using a negative feedback, if the input waveform, accumulated over one sampling period, rises above the value accumulated in the negative feedback loop during previous samples, the converter outputs a digital "1." If the waveform falls relative to the accumulated value, a digital "0" is output.

 Super Audio CD - SACD
DSD enables a much more direct signal path than the Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) format of original CD, which requires a number of interpolation and over-sampling filters during recording and playback.
DSD increases the resolution of music by more closely following the original wave form of the music, which results in music reproduction that is remarkably pure and faithful to the original.
The DSD layer is made of a special material, which is designed to reflect or transmit laserlight depending on its wavelength.

 Glossary
The signal must stay in a pure digital form at every stage and not pass thru any analog to digital or digital to analog converters.
These devices are inherently impure because the digital input or source signal must be converted to analog before it can be output or amplified digitally.
"Direct Stream Digital" encoding will be able to provide a frequency response from DC to 100 kHz with a dynamic range of 120 dB.

Digital samples must be at least double the frequency of the analog signal in order for the digital sample to accurately represent the analog signal.
Oversampling is a digital filter that boosts the frequency of the digital sample.
Two reasons for this: 1) boosting the frequency helps the digital sample to be converted to analog more faithfully during playback, and 2) the leftover digital frequencies are filtered out so that the signals do not interfere with other electronics.

Direct Stream Digital was developed by the engineers at Sony's Advanced Development Laboratories in Tokyo, Japan.
DSD's simpler, direct signal flow eliminates the need for complex (and often inaccurate) decimation and interpolation filters.
After nearly a year of extensive listening, Mobile Fidelity's engineering department found that DSD's extremely high 2.8MHz sampling rate and DC to 100kHz frequency response demonstrated tremendous strides in addressing the fatiguing "digititis" characteristics (hardness, glare, etc) that are a common complaint among compact disc critics.

 Glossary: DSD™ (Direct Stream Digital™) | Sweetwater.com
Sony and Philips claim the dynamic range of the SACD to be 120dB, and the frequency response to be a true 0Hz [DC] to 100kHz (more than twice that of the current 24/96 frequency response of 48kHz, and even unprecedented for analog recording systems).
Recordings made with DSD can be sample rate converted to all existing sample rates (32kHz, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96) via simple integer multiplies and divides.
The sample rate for DSD - 2.8224MHz [yes, you read that right] - is evenly divisible by all of the parenthetically mentioned sample rates, of great import for producing quality digital downsampling to rates more common today.
