A direct variation is a situation in which two quantities -- such as hours and pay, or distance and time -- increase or decrease at the same rate.
The constant is the constant of proportionality and the ratio is a direct proportion.
Two objects that vary directly are also said to be "directly proportional." It should be noted that the graph of a direct variation, or a direct proportion, will always contain the origin (0, 0); conversely, if a line does not contain the origin, it is not a direct proportion.

The Daily, Tuesday, May 17, 2005. Foreign direct investment
Direct investment is a category in the financial account of the international investment position, which refers to investment of a resident entity in one country obtaining a lasting interest in an enterprise resident in another country.
In the Canadian statistics, direct investment is measured as the total value of equity, net long-term claims and net short-term claims of non-bank enterprises held by the enterprise across the border.
At the end of 2004, foreign direct investment assets were mainly in the finance and insurance industry (45%), in the energy industry (11%) and in the metallic minerals industry (11%).

The Daily, Wednesday, March 26, 2003. Foreign direct investment
Direct investments (asset and liability) are investments through which investors in an economy acquire a significant influence over the management of a business operating in another economy.
The growth in the foreign direct investment position in Canada was partly due to acquisitions by American interests of Canadian companies, mostly in the energy and mining sectors early in the year.
At the end of 2002, the direct investment positions of foreign investors were mainly in the finance and insurance sector (19.2%) and the energy sector (16.2%).

Direct proportions are normally written as y = mx where x and y are the two quantities in proportion and m is the common ratio.
Examples of quantities in direct proportion include: - wages and #hours worked - commissions and quantity of goods sold - amount of water in the tub and time the tap has been left on - distance and time (for uniform motion) - weight and mass.
Inverse proportions are normally written as xy = c or as y = c/x, where x and y are the two quantities in inverse proportion and c is a constant.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Analogy
Two things are related by a direct proportion of degree, distance, or measure: e.g., 6 is in direct proportion to 3, of which it is the double; or the healthiness of a remedy is directly related to, and directly measured by, the health which it produces.
Or, the two objects are related one to the other not by a direct proportion, but by means of another and intermediary relation: for instance, 6 and 4 are analogous in this sense that 6 is the double of 3 as 4 is of 2, or 6:4::3:2.
As human knowledge proceeds from the data of the senses directed and interpreted by reason, it is evident that man cannot arrive at a perfect knowledge of the nature of God which is essentially spiritual and infinite.

This is especially evident in the states, where the proportion of institutions registered to lobby has increased relative to associations (such as trade associations and municipal leagues, whose members are institutions) and to membership groups (such as Common Cause, whose members are individual citizens).
Indeed, the institutions’ proportion of state interest communities grew from 39.55 percent in 1980 to 49.02 percent in 1990 and to 57.51 in 1997 (Gray and Lowery, 1996, 2001).
Direct lobbying by institutions could equally as well suppress the formation and/or survival rates of specialist associations, because they pose options that are more specifically competitive with direct lobbying.

In previous activities, all the proportions that you studied were a special type of proportion called a direct proportion.
In direct proportions, when one row of a table shows that the proportion gets larger, the numbers in the other row or rows get "proportionally" larger.
However, the proportion must be set up much differently to account for the fact that one term is increasing while the other is decreasing.

Teagasc - Project Report - 4656 - The Impact of Direct Payments on Farm Income Distribution
Evolution of Subsidies in EU Direct income payments for agriculture are defined to cover all recurring non-market payments made directly from public authorities' budgets to individual farmers that have the effect of increasing farmers' incomes [OECD:1994:1].
Data available from the 1996 NFS on the contribution of selected direct payments to aggregate farm income is presented for 1996 as well as a measure of their individual effects (concentration coefficient) on the distribution of total income.
The Concentration Coefficient, measured according to the concentration curves showing the distribution of direct payments (which is the corollary to the Gini Coefficient for Lorenz curves) fell from.6277 to.5457 in the period and is indicative of a substantial reduction in inequality in the period.

 Proportion Problems
Proportion problems are word problems where the items in the question are proportional to each other.
They are two main types of proportional problems: Directly Proportional Problems and Inversely Proportional Problems.
Inversely Proportional questions are similar to directly proportional problems, but the difference is that when x increase y will decrease and vice versa - which is the inverse proportion relationship.

In NTM 04-72 the NASD specifically rejected the idea that broker-dealer of record changes for direct held mutual funds and variable annuities could be treated the same as the transfer of brokerage accounts, via a negative response letter process, at the termination of a financial institutions networking relationship with a broker-dealer.
Therefore, the only means available to change the broker-dealer responsible for a direct held mutual fund or variable annuity position is by prior affirmative approval from each customer.
While this position is of limited use in changing networking relationships, it does align the transfer of direct mutual fund and variable annuity positions with the more flexible treatment available for brokerage accounts transfers provided in NTM 02-57.
