DIRECTFB MATROX G400/G450/G550 TV-OUT -HOWTO Pekka Tiittanen, peti at kauhajoki.fi Ville Syrjälä, syrjala at sci.fi v0.2.2, 14 March 2004 This document describes how to set up tv-output with DirectFB when using Matrox Dualhead hardware.
I'm refering to Ville Syrjälä who has contributed to the DirectFB project with code that enables the use of tv-out with these cards.
Also notice that you have to compile mplayer after you've installed new version of DirectFB, but there might be a possibility, that mplayer doesn't always work with the newest version of DirectFB.

Ah, crap, I think I know what this is. The sidsafb driver uses a flag in fb_var_screeninfo.sync to determine the polarity of the pixel clock, and it seems like any userspace program that changes any framebuffer settings needs to know about this; otherwise the flag might not get preserved when switching modes.

DirectFB is a hardware abstraction layer for embedded systems that makes use of the Linux framebuffer to provide hardware graphics acceleration, support for various input devices and an integrated windowing environment with support for translucent windows.
The real difference between the generic Linux framebuffer and DirectFB is that the latter provides graphics primitives not currently available to the former, not the least of which is alpha blending, otherwise known as transparent windows.

We did not care for pixel_clock, left/right margin and vertical/horizontal sync, because DirectFB does not works when frame buffer drivers return FALSE to these parameter.
So x86 DirectFB is mandatory as a reference when you port DirectFB to the Linux runs on embedded CPU like SH-4.

I was able to interest some more people from #gnome-de for directfb (at least to have them try it for at least one time) and they all seem to be pretty much impressed about it.
Now that DirectFB has good support for GDK and furthermore GNOME is one of the biggest projects around GTK+ it would be pretty cool to have support for it.
this patch is needed to allow directfb to run multiple applications otherwise directfb deals only with one app at one time.

 MAXCONSOLE - XBOX - New sXb based slackware v10.2 with directfb and xdirectfb
So we have 4 video methods to run in xdesktop and instead of pure console I used dfbterm which is much more clear and faster with mouse or xpad support.
I compiled it all with directfb v9.23 cvs latest support and multi-fusion, which means you can run 8 directfb apps at a time.
Please note that mplayer, xine and gxine were compiled with directfb support so please do not take any module out of the modules dir which are already in the sXb iso or mediaplayers (or even sxb itself) might not work.

Indeed, i made daily "cvs update" and rebuilt GTK from scratch for the whole past week, before 2.10.4 was released, but it seems this wasn't enough.

I'm sure I read a post on the forums that support for directfb was going to be added in as mythtv/directfb is now a reliable combination, but I cant find it again }:-
Bug 95039 Clearly states that DirectFB will not be supported in the mythtv ebuild in the near future.
this will cause it to not pull in regular QT if you dont want X, and will cause it to use qt-embedded if you have directfb turned on; you will need to perform this step on each ebuild you are installing.

This path happens to be the host libpng12.so library, when we really want the target's library, so it has the wrong format.
Why libtool does this I have no idea, but I was able to work around it by explicitly specifiying the full path of target libpng12.so library in the corresponding DirectFB "Makefile".
In my case, I had to make this correction in only 2 places, though "-lpng12" is specified in hundreds of places within the DirectFB Makefile source tree.

I have had the plugins working ok with QT-embedded though I was using a pvr-305 rather than the directFB support.

The main reason is that the actual framebuffer memory is the System RAM itself, thus the bottleneck of writing to the PCI/AGP bus is avoided.
Once you have patched the DirectFB source tree, there's no need to patch it again.
Run the benchmark program again, and when you exit, you should be able to see some statistics on how the driver performed.

In x it'll use glx, in directfb it'll use directfb's, on a mac it'll use macs, etc.
DirectFB is just a accelerated graphics API that can use the graphics adaptor's framebuffer, and shows a good number of growing DirectFB acceleration drivers to improve the framebuffer peformance; as usual the better supported chipsets are those provided by Matrox and nVidia and 3Dfx and Via (CL* and S3 or S4).

Hi All, I am trying to use SDL with directfb for hardware acceleration and I'm getting: (!) [ 8336: 0.000] --> Caught signal 11 (at (nil), invalid address) <-- I get this error when I'm trying to use Mplayer to play with -vo sdl option or when I am trying to run testvidinfo.
I've downloaded the latest SDL sourcecode from the CVS, but the latest patches doesn't seem to solve this problem.

If you are running the application from the framebuffer console that the directfb apps are supposed to appear on this is unlikely to work, since the framebuffer will be controlled by the console, and the console and directfb will interfere with each other in calls to the framebuffer.
If you are running the app from a serial console or Telnet/SSH terminal the no-vt option should work for you.
