Manual transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a synchromesh gearbox, the teeth of the gears of all the transmission speeds are always in mesh and rotating, but the gears are not directly rotationally connected to the shafts on which they rotate.
In the early 1950s only the second-third shift was synchromesh in most cars, requiring only a single synchro and a simple linkage; drivers' manuals in cars suggested that if the driver needed to shift from second to first, it was best to come to a complete stop then shift into first and start up again.
Double declutching, that is, shifting once to neutral to speed up the gears and again to the lower gear, is sometimes needed.

Transmission (mechanics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The simplest transmissions, often called gearboxes to reflect their simplicity (although complex systems are also called gearboxes on occasion), provide gear reduction (or, more rarely, an increase in speed), sometimes in conjunction with a right-angle change in direction of the shaft.
With computer technology, considerable effort has been put into designing gearboxes based on the simpler manual systems that use electronically-controlled actuators to shift gears and manipulate the clutch, resolving many of the drawbacks of a hydraulic automatic transmission.
Most modern gearboxes will either reduce an unsuitable high speed and low torque of the prime mover output shaft to a more useable lower speed with higher torque, or do the opposite and provide a mechanical advantage (i.e increase in torque) to allow higher forces to be generated.

Direct-Shift Gearbox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Direct-Shift Gearbox (Direktschaltgetriebe) is a dual-clutch gearbox invented by BorgWarner and initially licenced to Volkswagen (which also owns the Audi, SEAT, Bentley, Bugatti and Škoda brands).
By using two clutches, fast shifts can be achieved, and the inefficient torque converter of a regular automatic transmission is eliminated.
BorgWarner who call their technology "DualTronic" have just (Aug 2005) signed further agreements with two other (unnamed) European Automotive manufacturers to incorporate their gearbox.

Shifting down is the same: the system recognises when the driver wants to move to a lower gear (for example, after braking into a bend) and is ready to shift in an instant.
Shifts are extremely smooth, regardless of whether you let the electronics take control or select when to shift yourself using the tiptronic lever or the paddles on the steering wheel.

Unlike the other systems that have a tendency to lurch forward during gearchanges — one person likened it to being in a row boat — DSG performs up- and downshifts in an amazingly smooth manner; the sensation from the driver's seat is no different from that of a full automatic transmission.
In simple terms, DSG is a semiautomatic transmission (a manual without a clutch pedal, if you like) that allows for both automatic and manual modes.
Unlike systems used by most manufacturers, such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Acura, DSG does not work through a torque converter, which means that it's basically a manual transmission with an automatic mode, rather than vice versa.
