This account of direction of fit is attractive to Humeans insofar as it allows them to abandon Hume’s own claim that desires lack representational or intentional content altogether while retaining the idea that they are non-cognitive. However, the account of direction of fit we have developed so far is insufficient for Humean purposes.
And according to a direction of fit account, an intention is likewise a commitment because in forming an intention I place certain norms of success upon my action, the content of which is given by the content of the intention.
But according to our direction of fit account, intentions are non-cognitive: they are not truth-evaluable in the way that beliefs are, since the truth of their contents provides a standard for evaluating the success of action, not the success of the intention themselves.

Dictionary of Philosophy of Mind - prior intention   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The direction of fit is characterized as world-to-mind, while the direction of causation is mind-to-world.
The world-to-mind direction of fit entails that in order for the prior intention to be successful, conditions in the world must conform to the conditions it specifies.
The prior intention's mind-to-world direction of causation follows from the fact that the prior intention causes the action and, when relevant, the conditions the action is intended to bring about.

The intentional structure of cognition and volition are mirror images of each other, with directions of fit and directions of causation running in opposite directions.

Perhaps the first to speak of "direction of fit" was the philosopher J.
"the direction of fit": in the case of naming something, the difference between the fitting of a name to an item, and the fitting of an item to a name.
The concept of direction of fit can also apply to speech acts: e.g., declarations have word-to-world direction of fit, whilst commands and promises have a world-to-word direction of fit.

Dictionary of Philosophy of Mind - intention-in-action   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
As he does with intentionality generally, Searle analyzes the intention in action as having a direction of fit and a direction of causation.
The direction of fit is described as world-to-mind; this means that in order for the intention to be successful, conditions in the world must conform to the conditions specified by the intention.
For in order to specify local conditions of success, as the intention-in-action purports to do particularly with its world-to-mind direction of fit, the mental component of action may have to involve general information relevant to the action that is crucial to, and independent of, the strictly local conditions of bodily movement.

I understand the basics of marketing and strategic direction but am struggling to find the links between the two, or any examples which could be used to illustrate this.
They fit the latter scenario where the launched a business based on a gut feel and then react to the orders coming their way.
Given the more stringent definition of strategic direction, this premise of "most companies are just competing on marketing with little regards to strategic direction" is even easier to accept.

Strategic planning can be described as the process an organization uses to formulate an idea of how it should develop, to transform that idea into a list of workable objectives, and to devise a plan to achieve those objectives.
In higher education, strategic planning began to proliferate in the 1980s, and it has become an important tool for colleges and universities as they grow and evolve to meet the needs of their constituents.
In spring 2003, FIT issued a Request for Proposal to engage a consulting firm to support the college’s effort to develop a strategic plan for the long- and short-term, beginning with fiscal year 2006.

Describing such a strategy seems to require a subtle "double time reference," both to the moment of promising and to moments at which the promise is satisfied, or infringed, or neither.
The difference between the strategies attached to word-givings and those attached to promises help us understand the difference between the word-to-world direction of fit, and the world-to-word direction.

 The direction of movement
The direction of movement is not always exactly parallel to the steering current, but has a component toward high pressure that varies inversely with the speed of the current, ranging from almost 0° with rapid movement to as much as 20° with speeds under 20 knots.
This would indicate that, to the extent that this effect accounts for the component of motion toward high pressure, northward moving storms would fit the direction of the steering current more closely than westward moving ones.
Corrections for both direction and rate of movement should be made when this is indicated by the windflow downstream in the region into which the storm will be moving.

They begin with a distinction between beliefs and desires, showing that the difference has to do with the "direction of fit" with the external world.
Beliefs (and perceptions) arise from the mind, but are checked and controlled by the world; if a belief proves false, we adjust the beliefs accordingly.
Thus, "Since desires and the like have a direction fo fit different from perceptual experience, it can be shown that there are no conscious desires." "Conscious desire," the concede, has a sensible meaning, but desire is not conscious "in any interesting sense."

Therefore, direction-of-fit analyses of belief and desire must be rejected.
