Directory assistance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Directory assistance (in the UK, directory enquiries) in telecommunications is a telephone call one can make to find out a specific phone number of a residence or business.
In the North American Numbering Plan (covering Canada and the United States), directory assistance may be contacted by dialing 4-1-1 (one of the N11 codes) or the Toll Free Number of one of the free directory assistance providers.
In the UK, directory enquiries used to be reached by dialling 192 (domestic numbers) or 153 (foreign), with the service supplied by the former monopolist, British Telecom.

Having a heterogenous directory infrastructure in a company the size of Boeing is a practical necessity, but it also creates headaches for the aerospace company, which has 900 directory-enabled applications that serve some 150,000 employees.
Boeing is one of the first companies to make the virtual directory an integral part of its directory service, but programmers and directory specialists at many large companies have been quietly using the tools for several years for specific, one-off applications or departmental development projects.

Privateline.com: Directory Assistance History circa 1985
In this system, a subscriber's call requesting directory assistance is routed via a special purpose incoming trunk which is connected to a switching network, for establishing a switchable voice connection to an operator, and is permanently connected to an audio response unit.
For each assistance call, the operator verbally requests data regarding the subscriber to be called and, upon its receipt, communicates with a directory assistance computer and concurrently controls a connection of the incoming trunk to the computer terminal.
A recognized problem of the prior art is that such computerized directory assistance systems need costly complicated and separate control units for both the switching network and the audio response unit, as well as separate connections to the switching network and the audio response unit.

Wireless: Directory assistance wants your cell number - Technology - International Herald Tribune
While a phone directory with land-line phone numbers has come to be accepted as a generally useful tool - if open to potential telemarketing abuse - consumers remain skeptical about listing their mobile phone numbers publicly.
Directory assistance advocates say that the service will not be a success if companies like Verizon, with their millions of subscribers, opt out.
One option she proposed was a message service whereby people calling a directory assistance service would not be given the numbers of the people they are trying to contact, but instead could leave voice messages that could be responded to later.

Is it time to cut the cords on directory assistance? - The Boston Globe
But because in-state directory assistance calls are regulated by individual states, in-state rates vary dramatically by state.
