Cussler seems ready to hand the franchise off to the next generation, and BLACK WIND is one of those transition novels in which the father and children take separate actions to save the world --- or at least a major portion of it --- from the same malevolent force.
Cussler has made a practice of interjecting himself, however momentarily, into the Pitt novels, and while such a practice would be irritating or contrived when carried out by lesser hands, it's always a pleasure here.

This is a typical Dirk Pitt "save the world" adventure, complete with fictional history (in this case, a secret Japanese plot during WWII to use bio-weapons) and a particularly evil villain (North Korean this time).
Dirk Jr takes on most of the hero role, although Dirk Sr (with buddy Al Giordino) must come to the rescue for the dramatic sea launch finale.
Damsels are in distress of course, and Dirk Jr pours on the charm as required.

First, Cussler, who was born in 1931, is the right age to have read Doc Savage’s adventures in the latter years of Doc’s original run in the pulps.
And in Dirk Pitt Revealed, a guide to the first 14 Pitt novels, Cussler mentions Doc Savage when he says his intent in creating Dirk Pitt was to write novels of pure adventure as opposed to detective or espionage yarns.
Cussler’s novels are much, much longer than Lester Dent’s pulp yarns.

Dirk Pitt was a diluted character with the son who I can't relate to.

I picked up the companion volume of Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed to bring myself back up to date with the plot synopsis of the previous books, and read the post-Flood Tide short story, "The Reunion" then continuing on with Atlantis Found.
At the conclusion of Valhalla Rising, I noted that Clive Cussler and real-life NUMA had found many shipwrecks, which had been detailed in the previous The Sea Hunters and soon to be released The Sea Hunters II.
Side note on Cussler novels: I noted that other Cussler fans voiced, on the Cusslermen website, that they would like to see the two heroes join forces in a book Since Dirk Pitt has taken on a new role in NUMA, there should be more than just a cameo in future NUMA Files books.
