Born Dirk Jan Struik in 1894 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands as a teacher's son, Struik attended the Hogere Bugerschool in The Hague, a middle class high school.
Struik's major works include classics such as Lectures on Classical Differential Geometry, A Concise History of Mathematics, Yankee Science in the Making, The Birth of the Communist Manifesto, and A Source Book in Mathematics, 1200-1800, all of which are considered standard textbooks or references.

Dirk Jan Struik, Professor Emeritus of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, died peacefully on Saturday, 21 October 2000 at his home in Belmont, Massachusetts.
Struik and Jan Arnoldus Schouten carried on an important and fruitful collaboration (Rowe, 1994, contains an extensive bibliography of their technical papers, as well as of Struik's other works).
Struik had a fascinating career whose motive force was his pitiless intellectual curiosity.

Struik was strongly influenced by Ehrenfest and attended the weekly seminar which he set up.
Aside from this, Struik spent much of his time pursuing an entirely new research project: to study the origins of American science in their social and economic setting, a subject that had barely been touched on by historians before this time.
Struik's Marxist views, however, were bound to lead to trouble in the McCarthy era and indeed this is exactly what happened.

Struik says he has never been a card-carrying Communist, but rather a "good Marxist." He defines Marxism as a "conception of the world"; communism, he maintains, is a political party.

However, Dirk Jan Struik's books are excellent choices -- very readable, and authoritative.
Struik was a great man. He died two years ago at the age of 105.
