Dirk Gently - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Dirk Gently   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Dirk Gently is a fictional character created by Douglas Adams and featured in the books Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul.
Dirk bills himself as a "holistic detective" who makes use of "the fundamental interconnectedness of all things" to solve the whole crime, and find the whole person.
Dirk Gently is actually not this character's "real" name; it is presented early on in the first book that it is a pseudonym for the much less memorable "Svlad Cjelli." "to dirk" is an archaic synonym for "to stab", so essentially "Dirk Gently" literally means "stab gently".

Dirk Hartog - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Dirk Hartog   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Dirk Hartog, Dutch sea captain, was one of the first Europeans to see the mainland of Australia.
In October 1616, Hartog, captain of the Eendracht, was sailing from the Cape of Good Hope (later to become the site of Cape Town) to Batavia (Jakarta) when he was blown off course and came upon an island off the coast of Western Australia, now called Dirk Hartog Island.
This led to suggestions that the plate, the oldest artifact in Australia's European history, should be acquired for an Australian museum, but the Dutch authorities have made it clear that the plate is not for sale.
