Struan (Bryan Brown) is the kind of man who never apologizes and never explains.
Then all is calm, and Struan observes that we are in the "eye of the hurricane." This must be some hurricane, because the eye alone lasts longer than some of the movie's whole decades, providing Struan with time to return home for the ending, which is romantic, glorious, tempest-tossed, tragic and way overdue.

Struan's a square-jawed hero of such phony charisma and bravado, he'd be the Shatneresque Zapp Brannigan from Futurama if he were a cartoon.
The only substantive difference between Dirk and Zapp is we're expected to take Dirk as seriously as he takes himself.
