 | | Adapted from the Clive Cussler novel, Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey), an ex-Navy-seal/history buff/oceanographer/romancer, has a lifelong obsession with a missing Civil War boat, an ironclad that might carry the treasure of rare Confederate gold coins. |
 | | While researching for something or other in West Africa, Dirk and his frat-boyish drinking buddy, Al (Steve Zahn, who provides some much needed comic relief), cross paths with a beautiful scientist (a bloodless Penélope Cruz), who’s researching a mysterious, deadly virus that could threaten all of Africa. |
 | | And the buddy-banter between Dirk and Al (Steve Zahn) is crisp, funny, almost as good as the Schwarzenegger/Tom Arnold back-and-forth from “True Lies.” We buy that they’ve been co-adventurers for years and years, best friends who trust each other with their lives, but never miss an opportunity to insult or undercut one another. |
