Dirt (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dirt is a grunge album by Alice in Chains, released on September 29, 1992 (see 1992 in music).
The band's breakthrough album, Dirt is widely regarded as Alice in Chains' best album, and classic from the golden age of grunge.
Recorded while lead singer Layne Staley was suffering through a heroin addiction, the album's gloomy, drug-addicted music helped turn it into a hit, reaching #6 on Billboard's 200 albums chart.

Alice in Chains : Dirt - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece.
Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict.
The album holds out little hope for its protagonists (aside from the much-needed survival story of "Rooster," a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam-vet father), but in the end, it's redeemed by the honesty of its self-revelation and the sharp focus of its music.

 Alice In Chains Album Reviews
Dirt (Columbia ‘92) Rating: A+ It turns out that Alice in Chains were just getting started, and there’s just no way that I can do this masterpiece justice with this measly little review.
True, some of these songs occasionally wallow in their own sludge (the album could use a little trimming) and there are no instantly identifiable classics, but perseverance will reward listeners with another highly satisfying album.
This live album is an improvement on Unplugged, as the band plays these songs as they were meant to be played: moody, dark, and heavy.

MTV Music | Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Profile and Biography
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's beginnings lay with the New Coast Two, a folk duo consisting of Jeff Hanna (guitar, vocals) and Bruce Kunkel (guitar, washtub bass), formed while both were in high school in the early '60s.
Their Warner albums sold well, but by the end of the 1980s the group was moving between labels.
By this time, the Dirt Band was working in their field alongside any number of country/bluegrass crossover artists whose career paths were made easier by that first record, including John Hiatt, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Rosanne Cash.

Facelift is definitely #1 for me, and JOF and Dirt are practically in a dead heat, and it probably depends on my mood, but I would pick JOF over it for now.
"Dirt" is a pretty iconic record and all, but I think the more timeless and rather beautiful acoustic and string compositions on JOF make it sound pretty dated and drab by comparison.
It is also the purest A. album with no attempt to write in any specific format or style.

The front cover said it all: buried in a desert under dirt is Layne Staley’s sometime fiancé and soul mate Demri, whom herself died in 1995 of bacterial endocarditis after heroin abuse.
Driven by a desire to survive and a will to keep fighting, “Dirt” is an album that anyone can empathise with, such is the emotion that flows through the album like heroin through the veins, the grim portrait of an intentionally stark and emotionally bare opus of human desolation.
Although the confrontation of the band’s problems did not solve all of them, what remains is a truly landmark album of unprecedented and since unequalled articulation of true angst and personal pain.
