DVD review of Dirty Pretty Things - DVD Town
"Dirty Pretty Things" is a good film and a recommendable film, but it is hardly an extraordinary film.
"Dirty Pretty Things" may not satisfy the tastes of all serious adult audiences, true, and it is mainly an exercise in characterization and style over substance or reason; but while it's unfolding, it usually works and keeps one under its spell.
They lift "Dirty Pretty Things" from the level of the ordinary mystery adventure to a special realm of things compellingly authentic and humane.

Reeling: the Movie Review Show's review of Dirty Pretty Things
"Pretty Dirty Things" is a competently done film that feels more like an exercise for helmer Frears than one of his more notable oeuvres.
The London of "Dirty Pretty Things" is one of cramped spaces and slick nighttime streets, daylight reserved for ethnic markets and a final scene of escape.
"Dirty Pretty Things" will offer an invaluable service if it causes its audience to start looking into the faces of those it takes for granted, although it devolves into a simplistic race-against-time, damsel-in-distress tale.

Reel Criticism - Audrey Tautou in Dirty Pretty Things
Overall, "Dirty Pretty Things" is an excellent film, and a wonderful dramatic antidote for those who are feeling "dumbed down" by what Hollywood has had to offer of late.

 Dirty Pretty Things
Dirty Pretty Things does not seem brutal enough in its condemnation of the powers that be who force the immigrants to hide in the shadows, nor does it make any valid comment on the scale of exploitation that these people face on a daily basis.
The London of Dirty Pretty Things is filled to capacity with people who have been forced out of their native lands and have arrived in London with hopes and dreams of a better life.
That said, Dirty Pretty Things is hardly a bastion of social realism; rather, it is a thriller that happens to take place in a world that, for all intents and purposes, does not exist.

Pretty and preposterous, this Mexican flick aims for a mix of Cuarónian whimsy and Almodóvarian outrageousness… and ultimately falls short.
The film she inhabits isn't a perfect one either, but that may just be the reason I have more pure affection for this gem than for any other offering at SIFF 2003.
It begins with an old man's rhythmic, constant hukkle (hiccup) and ends 75 minutes later with a dark wedding song -- the closest thing to dialogue in the film.

 Dirty Pretty Things
Dirty Pretty Things” is a romantic, political thriller that generates some wicked laughs toward the end of the story.
Here, bad things happen to good people, yet by the time the movie is over, some of the bad guys have gotten their due and Okwe and Senay are hopefully headed for a better future.
Compensation here is that the film is entertaining, the relationship between a black man and a white woman is fresh, and those of us that might feel less than privileged in the United States get a wake-up call as to how good we have it, when all things are considered.

The Movie Chicks - Interview - Chiwetel Ejiofor
So the truth is, there are things about both mediums that are challenging and things about both mediums that are very exciting, which is why I would hope to be able to continue to do both for as long as I can really.
That's one of the things that I found most incredible - to be able to create this environment which was heightened, but wasn't unfamiliar.
You feel in a way you could create, you could orchestrate if you had all the time in the world, something that's pretty close to what this character should be and all its facets.

MMI Movie Review: Dirty Pretty Things
There is a thriller lurking somewhere in Dirty Pretty Things, but fortunately Frears and screenwriter Steven Knight are in no hurry to define the stakes and wring out every drop of peril.
Dirty Pretty Things has a lot of good old-fashioned melodrama at its core.
With an engaging ensemble cast of international characters that never delve into caricature, Dirty Pretty Things is fun without being especially funny.

Miramax released Dirty Pretty Things on July 18, 2003 in New York and Los Angeles, and it will be playing in more cities throughout the country in the following weeks.
At the very least a cleverly executed thriller, the film also brings to light a handful of socially important issues…even though Frears, himself, would probably be the last person to agree with that perception.

village voice > film > Dirty Pretty Things; Johnny English by Jessica Winter
And so is Dirty Pretty Things, which tunnels beneath a bustling city's surface to find the personae non gratae who keep its motor clean.
Senay (Audrey Tautou), a Turkish asylum applicant who lends Okwe her couch, is sorely tempted by Juan's organs-for-passports program; abused by her employers, hounded by immigration officers—whom Frears casts as a pair of swarthy, raccoon-eyed gangsters manqués—and nursing a crush on emotionally unavailable Okwe, she hopes to join a cousin in New York City.
Steven Knight's script evolves unabashedly into a romantic thriller, but the Hollywood-formula framework is built on a decidedly un-Hollywood foundation in terms of subject matter, worldview, and plausible casting (incidentally, its sole star made her name in another Miramax joint that washed Paris's face of graffiti and other color).

eye - Pretty Things goes to hell - 07.31.03
Dirty Pretty Things' self-consciously urban feel -- reminiscent of Frears' '80s efforts, My Beautiful Laundrette and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid -- and the edgy shooting style of cinematographer Chris Menges are a poor fit with the plot contrivances and unsubtle dialogue that mar Knight's script.
Though Stephen Frears'Dirty Pretty Things is set in modern-day London, this is not the city as seen by tourists or even most residents.
However worthy their intentions, the filmmakers risk trivializing the problems of Britain's illegal aliens in order to serve up something juicy enough to intrigue viewers who don't give a toss for the wretched of the earth.

Like Pulling Teeth (Or Stealing Kidneys): Stephen Frears On "Dirty Pretty Things"

Dirty Pretty Things Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Like Laundrette, Dirty Pretty Things is set in a section of London teeming with recent immigrants, legal and otherwise, who rely on gritty entrepreneurial skills to survive.
Actually, Okwe already knows things are shady at the Baltic—a resident prostitute (Sophie Okonedo) is his friend, after all—but the telltale heart is the first sign he's seen of bloodshed.

 Dirty Pretty Things (2003): Reviews
"Dirty Pretty Things" reminded me of John Sayles' "The Brother from Another Planet", from the standpoint of a black actor, who doesn't portray a criminal as the lead, is directed by a white male in an English-speaking film.
By its third act, Okwe has found his solution and Dirty Pretty Things comes across as both clever but a little pat, another British drama about the misfits who pool their resources to defy the oppressive system, though it does not precisely leave a warm glow.
Things will not be a big concession-stand movie because the floating heart is our introduction to a cottage industry we hope won't catch on.

 Dirty Pretty Things (2002)
`Dirty Pretty Things', Stephen Frears' latest film played last year in Europe, but the North American opportunity to see it only came yesterday.
`Dirty Pretty Things', brilliantly written by Steve Knight, maintains its unpredictability right up to its surprise ending.
Much buzz, fortunately all merited, preceded it: an amazing Nigerian actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor, already acclaimed for his stage performances, makes his big-screen debut, while Audrey Tatou, the impossibly wide-eyed kook from 2001's `Amelie', tackles her first English-language movie role.

 An Interview With Stephen Frears
Dirty Pretty Things, written by Stephen Knight, he describes as “a little more than half there” when he read the first script.
Rather than viewing himself as a late starter, he positions his switch to the big screen as arriving at a time when he was mature enough to understand how to make films and connect with that audience.
When asked at the AFI screening how he gets actors to do “things,” he replies directly: “whatever it takes.” Sometimes it’s patience, other times a joke or something obvious.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Stephen Frears - 2003 - Dirty Pretty Things Movies Review
Dirty Pretty Things is one of the finest films I have seen this year.
Dirty Pretty Things is a rare movie that remembers the characters do not exist to do what's best for our sake, but what's best for theirs.

This gives Sneaky a chance to ham it up as he explains to the innocent refugee what the hotel business is all about, which also explains the film's title: "Strangers come to hotels to do dirty things.
"Dirty" centers around a young illegal Nigerian, Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor-English born Nigerian), who was a doctor in his homeland but had to flee for political reasons and is wanted back home for trumped up charges of murder.
By the time the end credits rolled down, I felt every scenario from the melodramatic romance to the dramatic plight of the illegals was contrived and the real meaning of dislocation and survival was sapped by the weak execution derived from the actors and the clumsiness dictated by the script.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: Dirty Pretty Things
Dirty Pretty Things is, at its core, a quest for home, for inclusion, and the crazed, half-mad desperation of Okwe and Senay is rooted in the realization that life affords them only three options: perpetual subjugation, death, or escape.
When Okwe infiltrates a local hospital with the help of a friendly crematorium porter, the fake ID he’s given looks nothing like him, to which the porter replies: “Black is black.” According to the film, most of the city views those like Okwe as interchangeable cattle, primarily useful as spare parts for the capitalist machine.
Things conclude in an unrealistically neat fashion – why would someone who fled a country under the threat of death think they could suddenly return to it?
