And the movie "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" evokes a more innocent time in the movies, too; it's a remake of the David Niven comedy "Bedtime Story," about a roguish Riviera con man bilking rich tourists out of more money than they needed in the first place.

Talkin' Broadway Review: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Okay, principles are funny things to demand from a show about con artists, but a show of any sort without a guiding set of rules has an uphill struggle in front of it, and "entertain the audience at any cost" is the kind of philosophy that only works these days for Mel Brooks.
That's what the creators of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are attempting, and while they succeed roughly half the time, it's the other, unanchored half that makes it hard to fall for this show's particular spiel.
But as the score is seldom well integrated with the book, the actors' opportunities are limited: Butz's raucous physical comedy and down-and-dirty portrayal energize Freddy, and Gleason overflows with comic charm in her utterly thankless role.

The new Broadway musical, which has a wonderful cast headed by John Lithgow, Norbert Leo Butz, Sherie Rene Scott and Joanna Gleason, is a giddy, high-octane show that encourages you to ignore its considerable flaws.
"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is based on the 1988 movie with Steve Martin and Michael Caine, about a couple of con artists — one elegantly British, the other low-down American — let loose on the French Riviera.
Lithgow, an extremely agreeable actor who is back on Broadway in a big way, plays the sleek and more than slightly oily Lawrence Jameson, the English half of the team.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, a CurtainUp review
The fun begins as the de rigueur voiceover announcement sets the tone for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' tongue-in-cheek humor with "there will be no announcement at this performance." The overture doesn't make us wait for the dancing and singing to begin either.
And though Scoundrels may not have quite the heart of the Full Monty, Yatzbek and Mitchell have invested it with the same freshness and vitality; and director Jack O'Brien (who also directed Hairspray) once again displays his ability to deftly balance sophisticated and broad comedy, romantic and novelty numbers.
The scoundrels portrayed by Lithgow and Butz aren't quite the fully realized, easy to identify with characters as The Producers' Bialystock and Bloom who also rip off vulnerable women, team up with a sexy blonde bombshell, and inevitably become the duped rather than those doing the duping.

If "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" -- an adaptation of the 1988 Steve Martin-Michael Caine comedy (itself a remake of the earlier "Bedtime Story") about a pair of con men -- doesn't quite reach the heights of "Monty" in terms of execution or heart, it is entertaining enough that audiences certainly won't feel swindled.
