I consider the Dirty South the states that are the heart of the Civil Rights movement...
The Dirty south is hip hop oriented, so you almost have to include florida with the "Trick Daddy" and booty music folks they have down there.
It was struggles in every state America, but the Dirty South refers to the center of the Civil Rights movement and that is centered in Alabama, Ga, Sippi, and TN, Arkansas.

Dirty South drew from The Chronic and 2 Live Crew's filthy traditions in equal measure, arriving at a stoned, violent, sex-obsessed and (naturally) profane brand of modern hip-hop.
The style drew its name from Goodie Mob's 1995 song of the same name and they, along with Outkast, were the best the genre had to offer, since both their lyrics and music were sharper than such contemporaries as the No Limit posse.

At fourteen songs and seventy minutes, The Dirty South is not without filler (the first of the two Buford Pusser songs comes to mind), and though it’s not as relentlessly bleak as its predecessor, a little of the levity evident on 2000’s smoldering live disc Alabama Ass Whupping would have been welcome.

Death and misery abounded, as listeners were hit by songs about murder, incest, suicide, divorce, the band channeling the rich past of American folk music, the songs paralleling the great murder ballads of the turn of the 20th century.
While the majority of the songs on the last album were fictional narratives, most of the 14 tracks on The Dirty South are about real people, namely the residents of the economically ravaged area of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where all but one of the band's five members grew up.

If the South had a modern-day storyteller, I believe that role would be divided equally among the three highly talented songwriters in The Drive-By Truckers.
Their sixth release, The Dirty South, reminds me of why they are one of my favorite bands.
Listening to this album is like sitting at the foot of your old, slightly cantankerous southern uncle as he tells you about how Sheriff Buford Pusser got what he deserved or how them people over in Huntsville can put rockets on the moon, but can't manage to keep people downriver from getting sick.
