The new disability studies is attempting to build the scholarly, pedagogical, and institutional structures that will enable us to understand in fresh ways both the fundamental human experience of embodiment and the meanings we have given to bodily variations and changes.
Bestowing the name new disability studies on the collection of scholarship, critical theory, teaching practices, professional activities, and collegial networks that has issued from the humanities on the topic of disability over the last several years is itself a legitimating act--which is precisely my point, of course.
Disability studies thus uses mainstream critical theory to dismantle the widespread belief that disability is a natural state of bodily inferiority, exposing that assumption as a cultural product fabricated from bodily variation.

Disability Studies, like analogous diversity studies (e.g., Women’s Studies and African American Studies), places disability within a social and political context, challenging the notion that the statuses and roles of individuals with disability result from physical or psychological aspects of disability.
By approaching disability from the perspective of human diversity and universality, the program promotes a more accurate understanding and appreciation of people with disabilities and the evolution of their civil rights movement; it also invites its audience to reflect on how the study of disability relates to professional, social and personal aspects of their lives.
That contextual foundation for Disability Studies is provided by a core of required courses that provide exposure to disability from a variety of perspectives: past and current definitions, fundamental concepts, theories, practices, policies, histories, institutions, communities, and events that shape our understanding of biological and cognitive differences.

The Society for Disability Studies (SDS) invites scholars from a variety of disciplines to bring their talents and concerns to the study of disability as a key aspect of human experience on a par with race, class, gender, sex, and sexual orientation.
(2) The research submitted must be relevant to disability studies, which we define broadly to include the examinations of concepts and values related to disability in all forms of cultural representation throughout history, as well as analyses which deepen our understanding of the personal and social dimensions of the lived experience of disability.

My intention is to…disclos[e] how the "physically disabled" are produced by way of legal, medical, political, cultural, and literary narratives that comprise an exclusionary discourse….I want to move disability from the realm of medicine into that of political minorities, to recast it from a form of pathology to a form of ethnicity.
By asserting that disability is a reading of bodily particularities in the context of social power relations, I intend to counter the accepted notions of physical disability as an absolute, inferior state and a personal misfortune.
In the broadest sense, my aim in teaching disability studies is to complicate the received "we" and "they" conception that implies both a victim/perpetrator and a normal/abnormal relationship between the disabled and the nondisabled.
