Disc brake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Experiments with disc-style brakes began in England in the 1890s; the first ever automobile disc brakes were patented by Frederick William Lanchester in his Birmingham factory in 1902, though it took another half century for his innovation to be widely adopted.
Disc brakes are also more reliable than drum brakes due to the simplicity of their mechanics, the low number of parts compared to the drum brake, and ease of adjustment.
The brake pads are designed for high friction with brake pad material embedded to the disc in the process of bedding while wearing evenly.

Carbon-carbon brake discs are composed of carbon fiber within a carbon matrix, exploiting the excellent thermal conductivity of graphite.
Carbon ceramic brakes are lightweight and have a very high specific heat and thermal conductivity, making them ideal as brake discs able to withstand over 1600 °C. They are also very expensive and require special pads, delegating them for use mostly on high end applications such as the Porsche Carrera GT.
The lifespan of carbon-ceramic brakes is limited by cracking that occurs because of the different rates of expansion between the carbon and the silicon carbide.

Disc brake - Auto Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A braking disc (or rotor in US English), usually made of steel, is connected to the wheel or the axle.
This means that the brake pads remain in contact with the disc and the discs will cool unevenly, this may lead to warping as desribed above.
A brake disc is a heat sink, remove mass and you increase the stresses it will have to contend with.

I needed the rear disc brake assembly from a '95 to '98 Grand Cherokee's Dana 35 axle.
After receiving the D-35 brake parts from a '94 Grand Cherokee (hey, it was close), I visited the local Jeep dealership to acquire a few new pieces for the disc brake assemblies.
I saw an '03 with discs on a lift and noticed that the rear discs on the 44 were identical to the ZJ discs.

Avid | Disc Brakes | Ball Bearing Road   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Most mechanical disc brakes are very sensitive to the angle at which the cable housing terminates at the caliper.
Using a 1-piece cast body supported by two tensioned truss bolts, the mechanical caliper is the strongest and stiffest disc brake on the market.
Additionally, since adjusting for brake pad wear at the barrel adjuster limits the amount of lever travel, it is recommended that brake pads be adjusted at the caliper, not the lever.

 DISC
Attach the new brake hose banjo bolt to the caliper.
However, the rear discs do see a fair bit of duty when the brakes are applied heavily, and that's when this upgrade is valuable.
I've also noticed that the parking brake is a fair bit sloppier than the old drum setup, since the rear discs utilize a separate inner drum parking brake.

 Motorcycle Online: Disc Brake Tech
The floating disc allows the inner portion of the disc mounting system to be made from a lighter, weaker material and hence decrease the rotating mass of the wheel and adding to the overall lightness of the motorcycle.
However, on this particular bike the rear disc is solidly mounted to the wheel and isn't of the "floating" type as the front discs.
The basic idea is to have two people, one puts a light amount of pressure on the brake lever to introduce pressure into the system while the other opens the bleeder screw on the caliper and closes it after a couple seconds, thus purging the system of a little bit of fluid and air.

Now the trick for road bikes is that Avid does not package a 203mm disc rotor with their Road calipers and of course, it's the 203mm that you want.
The later is probably better technically, because when a disc brake is applied the rear wheel is forced up into the dropouts (this is a good thing).
Conversely, when the mount point is on the seat stay, braking forces combined with wheel/road traction try to kick the wheel down and out of the rear dropout (a bad thing).
