  Discipleship
Discipleship was a common phenomenon in the first century world.
From the beginning of Jesus' ministry, this concept of discipleship was established as the basis on which he would teach and pass on his message.
In choosing discipleship he was taking a big risk in entrusting to ordinary people like the disciples and you and me, the responsibility of communicating the Good News.

articles : Hurried Discipleship by Mike Yaconelli : Youthworker Journal
Discipleship has been turned into a measurable, external activity instead of an immeasurable, internal lack of activity.
Discipleship has become a commitment that can be measured, instead of a relationship that cannot be measured.
Jesus’ program of discipleship was simple: hang out with the disciples; let them see you at your best and worst; spend lots of time alone; teach truths none of your disciples can grasp at the moment; avoid crowds; go slowly; spend hours in solitude; don’t worry about opposition; ignore criticism; and don’t expect immediate results.

Pentecostal Identity and Christian Discipleship by Wolfgang Vondey   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
The crisis in discipleship is not based on matters of outward disobedience; mostly it is related to a lack of inward submission.
Discipleship that focuses on formation but neglects the identity of the disciple and of the transforming community is doomed to repeat its mechanisms until they are run down.
The challenge is less in the content nor in the consequences of Christian discipleship but rather in how the content is going to be applied to a people that are unaware of their identity and unconcerned about the consequences.

 The Cost of Discipleship
This was done by studying the terms for discipleship in the NT and by showing that the call to salvation is not the same as the call to discipleship.
The basic conditions of discipleship were given by Christ after Peter’s well-known confession and Christ’s prediction of His death and resurrection and the story of His transfiguration.
Discipleship, as abiding in intimacy with Christ, is elsewhere in John made conditional on love and obedience (e.g., 13:35; 14:15, 21, 23; 15:4, 7, 10, 14).

 Coming to Terms with Discipleship
The debate is important, for clearly discipleship is a foundational concept of the Christian life which dictates all that we are to be and much of what we are to he doing.
If discipleship is becoming a Christian, as Lordship Salvation teaches, then the church must preach a gospel of commitment, surrender, and sacrifice as conditions of salvation, for these are the conditions of discipleship.
The Epistles, by implicitly equating discipleship with imitation, affirm that discipleship is the commitment of believers to obey and submit to the authority of Christ.

DI endorses a biblically based, conservative, evangelical position, proclaiming that all must turn from sin to trust the death, burial, and resurrection of the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, as the only remedy for sin and the sole foundation for true religion.
The perspective of this emphasis- “Discipleship International of Hearts and Homes” is that the end-result be characterized with consciousness of heaven and eternity; the discipleship being eternally accurate, adequate and current to Father’s satisfaction.

The Imitation of Christ in Christian Tradition--Its Missing Charismatic Emphasis
If we put aside the miracle aspect of discipleship, however, it is generally understood in Christendom that the Gospels and Acts seem to present the disciples of Jesus as surrogates for the reader.
Discipleship, however, moves to a third, fourth and even a fifth generation in the NT.
But the point is, if NT discipleship depends upon replicating the life of the exemplar, then miracles represent a significant part of "imitating Christ." Indeed, if the amount of space a writer devotes to a subject is any index to its importance, then the healings, exorcisms and other "extraordinary" charismata must be extremely important.

It is a great way to follow Jesus instruction to make disciples of all the nations, "teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." This isn't a method to win converts.
Most people in western culture approach the subject of discipleship in a systematic, logical manner.
We create an agenda, formulate a plan and launch out, often oblivious to the needs of the person with whom we are attempting to share our life in Christ.

Officially called Christian Growth Ministries, the movement quickly became known as the "shepherding" or "discipleship" movement because of the leaders' strong emphasis on what they saw as the believer's need to submit to an authoritative "shepherd" for the purpose of being "discipled" in the Christian life.
For instance, teachers who insist that one-on-one discipleship is either crucial or essential to growing to maturity in the Christian life often do so on the basis of 2 Tim.
