Ground and Sky review - King Crimson - Discipline
Discipline was originally the band's name, with Bruford and Fripp from the previous 70s incarnation of Crimson joining up with guitarist/vocalist Adrian Belew (fresh from Frank Zappa's band) and bassist Tony Levin (who has played in innumerable jazz and rock bands).
On their first album, songs like "Elephant Talk", "Frame By Frame", "Thela Hun Ginjeet" (an anagram for Heat in the Jungle) and the title track showed the band's new style of having the nimble melody lines of each of the stringed instruments play off one another to create almost hypnotic patterns.
In short, Discipline is perhaps the most successful and in a sense truly 'progressive' comeback of a prog rock group that had been away for seven years.

Tentative Review by The Christopher Currie: King Crimson - Discipline
Originally entitled "Discipline", the unit was to serve as the opening volley of Fripp's curiously titled (though sadly prophetic, in the light of subsequent albums) "decline to '84".
Discipline captures the group at the crest of their artistic purpose, and is the definitive statement of the unit.
And, finally, "Discipline" closes the album with a statement of controlled expressivity, using the skills of all group members to create a successful whole (though the cymbal crashes in the middle of the piece serve as a momentary disruption).

Discipline (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Discipline is an album by the band King Crimson, released in 1981.
The album resulted in a more updated 1980s new wave pre-techno sound mixed with the previous dark and heavy sounds of the 1970s.
The original release of Discipline featured only one version of "Matte Kudasai", with a guitar part by Robert Fripp that was removed from the track on a subsequent release of the album.

To sum things up, Discipline is essential King Crimson and should be a part of any serious music collection (even if you already have the previous version).

If you are a fan of early Discipline releases then you may not be as into this album as you are of the other stuff.
Nothing really that 'new' in regards to the sound and lyrics on this album as compared to their last couple of releases, but by no means is it 'the same thing again' or not as good.
Discipline are one of the few bands who have changed their sounds a lot from their first album through to this latest release, but have gotten away with it.

The album with which King Crimson was reborn in 1981 after a seven year absence, this was a very influential release, as a generation of budding guitarists could not help but be astonished by the interplay and pure discipline of Belew and Fripp's precise guitar craftsmanship.
DISCIPLINE is the prefect way to express the unknown, the outregous, the magnificent, bieng located in the 80's, is a heel of a record, with a 90's feeling.
The album has a lot of tribal and "third world" influences, leading one critic to glibly label it a "guitar gamelan." But there's plenty of firepower to be had, plenty of staccato Fripp solos, howling Belew feedback, the then-unique sound of Levin's Chapman stick, and Bruford's impeccable, supersonic drum figures.

 IGN: Reader Review: Discipline
Discipline opens up with the very distinctive new-era-Crimson song "Elephant Talk." This particular song shows quite well what this album is going to be like: manic music driven mostly by rhythm and Belew´s spoken-sung lyrics, which resemble Talking Heads frontman David Byrne´s singing (perhaps a result of Belew's stint in that band back in 1980?).
From these auspicious beginnings, the album dips into the more melodic piece "Frame By Frame." On this track Belew's shout and response lyrics are accompanied by a fine interplay of his and Fripp´s guitar work.
Discipline serves as a blueprint for King Crimson's work throughout the '80s and into the '90s, as well as into the new millennium.

Discipline accepts no reason for artists to give away such copyright interests in their work by virtue of a "common practice" which is out of tune with the time, was always questionable and is now indefensible."
In the early 1980s, the seminal albums of Dieter Moebius and Conny Plank came on like an early blueprint for techno, house and electro-pop, anticipating the foregrounding of persistent rhythm grooves, the side exit of the guitar solo, the extended instrumental mix of the single.
The album and its accompanying tours managed the task of appealing to older Crimson fans while allowing the band to develop a whole new audience - perhaps, unsurprisingly, as many of the musical ideas initially formulated by earlier lineups had been absorbed, extended and re-presented in a new light by bands directly influenced by Crimson.

Discipline has been a highlight in the Crimson catalogue for twenty years for good reason: it's a highly intelligent, challenging, dynamic piece of musical craftsmanship and the performances are top-notch.
To put it succinctly, Discipline may be one of the greatest prog-rock albums ever made, and it is surely one of King Crimson's best.

Exposure (Robert Fripp album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Exposure is the lone rock music solo album by Robert Fripp, the guitarist famous for being the only constant member of the progressive rock band King Crimson.
Originally, Fripp had intended the album as the third part of a simultaneous trilogy recorded 1977 to 1978 including the debut solo album by Daryl Hall, Sacred Songs, and Peter Gabriel's second album, both of which Fripp contributed to and produced.
Fripp instead used only two Hall vocals on his album, substituting Peter Hammill and Terre Roche in various places; ergo the trilogy did not appear quite as intended, although all three albums eventually appeared in the marketplace.

Gill plays down the album as something of a watershed for country music, yet a solo artist has never released a four-album project of all-new, self-written material.

When King Crimson leader Robert Fripp decided to assemble a new version of the band in the early '80s, prog rock fans rejoiced, and most new wave fans frowned.

'Discipline' is very much as case of the latter.
Adapting to the post-punk experimentalism of the early 1980s with genuine intelligence and enthusiasm, Discipline remains one of King Crimson's definitive statements.
Although containing elements of the avant-funk of Talking Heads, the ethnic grooves of Peter Gabriel and the constantly shifting Minimalist rhythms of Steve Reich, this frequently thrilling and complex album ultimately bears the unique imprint of the four highly individual and talented musicians at the heart of this 'Rock Gamelan' creation.

Hoewever, "Heartbeat" is a great love song, far and away the most straightforward the band has ever done-- it is however responsible for the opinion that Belew was putting a pop spin on the band, and I suspect if they did it over again, this one may not have made it.
