In law, the term discovery is used during pre-trial phase in a lawsuit in which each party through the law of civil procedure can request documents and other evidence from other parties or can compel the production of evidence by using a subpoena or through other discovery devices, such as requests for production and depositionss.
After discovery, both sides usually are in agreement about the strength of each side's case and this produces a settlement which eliminates the expense and risks of a trial.
Discovery is an album by Electric Light Orchestra which was released in 1978.

Electric Light Orchestra - Biography - AOL Music
The Electric Light Orchestra's ambitious yet irresistible fusion of Beatlesque pop, classical arrangements, and futuristic iconography rocketed the group to massive commercial success throughout the 1970s.
However, as Electric Light Orchestra's career descended, Lynne emerged as a sought-after producer, helming well-received comebacks from George Harrison (1987's Cloud Nine) and Roy Orbison (1989's Mystery Girl) and additionally re-teaming with both rock legends as well as Bob Dylan and Tom Petty in the hit supergroup the Traveling Wilburys.
In 1988, meanwhile, Bevan formed Electric Light Orchestra Part II with vocalist Neil Lockwood, keyboardist Eric Troyer, and bassist Pete Haycock; although Lynne filed suit against the group (hence the "Part II" tag), a self-titled LP followed in 1991, with a live collection recorded with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra appearing a year later.

Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar); Kelly Groucutt (vocals, bass guitar); Richard Tandy (guitar, piano, Clavinet, Moog synthesizer); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion, background vocals).
The album's big hit, "Don't Bring Me Down," couldn't be called punk, or even new wave, but the in-your-face arrangement and snarling vocals do at least betray some hint of the more aggressive new music.

Roy Wood left ELO shortly after the release of their eponymously-titled first album (which produced the UK hit "10538 Overture") and Jeff Lynne stepped up to lead the band (the first album was released with the mistaken title of No Answer in the USA, due to a mix-up with a telephone message).
The album generated their biggest hit "Don't Bring Me Down" (which also was their only single not to feature any strings), along with "Shine A Little Love" (sampled in 2005 by Lovefreekz) and "Last Train To London" (sampled in 2003 by Atomic Kitten on their hit "Be With You").
Not long after this album, the violinist Mik Kaminski and the two cellists Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale were considered surplus to requirements and were dismissed.

Discovery (Electric Light Orchestra album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was the band's first No. 1 album in the UK, entering the chart at that position, and contained four major hits in "Shine a Little Love", "Confusion", "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Last Train to London", all of which were very disco influenced.
The album itself was the first ever to generate four top ten singles from a single LP in the UK.
Discovery is notable in that it was the first ELO album not to feature their resident string trio of Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale, although they did make an appearance on the Discovery (music video)'s.

Discovery isn't one of the Electric Light Orchestra's strongest albums, but it is more than redeemed by the inclusion of what is perhaps their greatest single, the massive "Don't Bring Me Down." "Shine a Little Love" and "Confusion" are also classic ELO tracks in which synths, guitars, and orchestration merge into a finely crafted whole.
But this folks has to be the best album to date.
If ELO bridges Pop and Prog (and many suggest that it does) Discovery is certainly more to the Pop side (while the next albumn, Time, leans more to the prog side).

Overall, Discovery is a wrongfully-bashed Electric Light Orchestra gem, and in many ways, it marks the end of the band's classic period.
While it is true that the group would continue to release excellent albums as the band progressed, they would never truly recapture that classic seventies sound that brought them their initial fame.
Besides, in the case of Discovery, I would bet Jeff was admiring the high songwriting level of Bee Gees efforts and then he tried his hand at doing his own version of that, his own approach, or whatever we may want to name it.

During 2000, Lynne decided to reactivate the Electric Light Orchestra with ‘Flashback’, a retrospective 3-CD boxset, followed a year later by new album ‘Zoom’ and single ‘Alright’ plus a DVD of ELO’s first live shows for over 15 years, filmed in Los Angeles.

The Move got the bright idea to mix classical music with rock, and The Electric Light Orchestra was born.
A penchant for The Beatles' post-Strawberry output popped up noticeably on the first and third albums, but ELO was fast supplanting the strings with Richard Tandy's sweeping synthesizers.
In 1991, Electric Light Orchestra Part Two emerged from the ashes, led by original member Bev Bevan and featuring past members such as Kelly Groucutt and Mik Kaminski, serving more as an oldies act than a source of new music.

The standout on this album is perhaps the track also released as a single "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" - a great testimony to Jeff Lynne's songwriting skills and certainly one of his finest.
Time from 1981 continued where "Discovery" left off was described by Jeff Lynne as a concept album but still had its fair share of hit singles, including "Hold On Tight".

The first Move album and their early singles are mostly Beatles-influenced, occasionally psychedelic pop, although there were some traces of what was to come - the 1812 Overture quotes in the first Move single Night of Fear hint at ideas that would be more fully developed on later Move albums and the first ELO album.
ELO's tenth album, Secret Messages, was originally supposed to be a double album, but at the last minute the record company decided (for some unknown reason) to cut it back to one record.
Perhaps this is the second solo album that he had been rumored to be working on, and at the last minute he decided that it would sell better under the ELO name than his own.

Originally intended to be an offshoot of the popular progressive British rock group The Move, the Electric Light Orchestra was meant to be in existence alongside its progenitor.
There was still an album to record, and though Electric Light Orchestra II had only five songs, they were lengthy, jam-heavy art-rock adventures, the shortest of which was seven minutes long.
A new album of original songs was released as an ELO fan club exclusive in 2001, but now the Orchestra has reportedly found a label to release their self-titled relaunch in 2003, and a tour will almost certainly follow.

Y'know, I'm all for Sony's long-overdue series of remastered-with-extra-goodies ELO albums, but there's only so much polishing that can be done on the group's most shamelessly disco-fied album.
This isn't to say that there aren't some little-known gems on Discovery - there are, and I've admitted that since the album's original release, but sometimes the taste of disco lingers unpleasantly in my mouth.
The bonuses on the new edition of Discovery are great, with two very short demo snippets - including an early draft of On The Run with very different lyrics and an outstanding ballad called Second Time Around which, amazingly, doesn't seem to have made the cut for actual session recording.

Fifteen years after Jeff Lynne masterminded the last official Electric Light Orchestra album, and ten after his solo debut, Lynne recorded Zoom - an ELO album that he recorded nearly entirely by himself.
Well, not only does Lynne own the ELO name, so he can do whatever he wants, but he designed this to be a return to the classic ELO sound.
Better than that, the songwriting is melodic and memorable, the strongest Lynne has done in decades, resulting in the most consistent record released under the ELO banner since Discovery.
