Discovery, Chance and the Scientific Method
These studies of contaminated cultures led to a series of observations by late 19th century bacteriologists and microbiologists describing the effect of mold on bacterial growth.
Another event, although overlooked at the time, in the string of occurrences which led to the discovery of penicillin was a dissertation written in 1897 by the French medical student, Ernest Duchesne.
In his dissertation, Duchesne reported the discovery, partial refinement, and successful testing on animals of a substance with antibiotic properties - that is a substance which inhibited bacterial growth.

Schiaparelli was born on March 14, 1835, in the town of Savigliano, in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, not far from the French border.
Though his observations had indicated a definite slow drift of markings across the disk, he explained this as an effect of libration, already well known in the case of the Moon, with its captured rotation with respect to the Earth.
In beginning his observations that evening, he found that everything appeared normal between 240° and 350° W longitude; he then interrupted his observations to secure a set of measures of a new comet that had been discovered a few days earlier by Wilhelm Tempel at Arcetri.

ONE-MILE-WIDE ASTEROID TO PASS CLOSE TO THE EARTH IN 2028
After the discovery observations on December 6, observations made by two Japanese amateur astronomers during the following two weeks showed that the minimum distance between the orbits of 1997 XF and the earth was very small.
Observations made on March 3 and 4 by Peter Shelus with a 30-inch telescope at the McDonald Observatory in western Texas extended the observed arc of 1997 XF to 88 days.
The observations, on 1990 Mar. 22 and 23, were consistent with each other and allowed a much improved orbit to be derived for 1997 XF These latest computations show that the nominal miss distance will be 600 thousand miles on 2028 Oct.

The half-months are as used for discoveries of minor planets, the difference being that minor-planet designations have a second letter (as well as possible numerals) to indicate the order of discovery announcement.
'Discovery' refers to the time when the discovery observation is actually made (and in the case of a photographic observation, for example, it is usually the time of mid-exposure), even though the comet might not actually be recognized until long afterward.
When the periodicity of a comet is well-established, either because of a recovery or an identification at a second passage through perihelion, this is shown by assigning a sequential periodic-comet number, which normally appears in front of the P/ (or D/) prefix.

The discovery observation (and thus the discoverer) is taken to be that which permits the CBAT to issue reasonable requests for confirming observations (directly to individual observers or sometimes via "The NEO Confirmation Page" at the CBAT/MPC website) or to issue an announcement Circular.
The time of comet discovery is taken to be the time of the first detection visually or the time that the image was taken upon which the discovery was made.
If follow-up observations performed by (an) observer(s) other than the original discoverer of a reportedly "asteroidal" object show the object to be a comet (that is, showing a coma and/or tail), -- and the provisos of 4.2 do not apply -- the comet may receive a single name of the original discoverer (individual or team).

More than three dozen elusive whitedwarf stars have been found in a halo of objects surrounding our galaxy, marking the first direct evidence for previously unseen "darkmatter" and lending support to a widely held theory that there is muchmore to the universe than meets the eye.
The new discovery confirms the existenceof one kind of dark matter, called normal or baryonic dark matter.
Thehunt is still on for a more exotic type of dark matter, called nonbaryonic, assumed to be made of strange particles that behave in ways not entirelyknown.
