European culture was used distinctively in the park and Discoveryland uses the ideas of famed European thinkers and explorers, with Jules Verne featured most prominently.
Parts of Discoveryland have been heavily inspired by the abandoned Disneyland expansion concept, Discovery Bay, which was to have sat on the north bay of the Rivers of America in the Californian park.

 "Tomorrow Never Dies"
Disneyland Paris's Discoveryland was the first manifestation of this trend: it attempts to create a future dictated by the ideals and aesthetics of the 19th century.
Yes, Discoveryland's designers had the advantage of starting from scratch—the renovators of the U.S. Tomorrowlands didn't—but it can't be overstated how important this sense of unity is to providing an immersive experience.
It is a vision of the future, but unlike Discoveryland's, it mocks visions of the future, making fun of the effort of even trying to guess what might lie ahead.

Why "Discoveryland"? - MiceChat   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
I think the name Discoveryland allowed WDI to tap into some great future-past ideas (and tap into those Euro/Jules Verne styles) as well as not saddle themselves with a futuristic theme that wouldn't age very well.
While I agree that adding the Lion King and Buzz Lightyear to Discoveryland is horribly misguided, the word, "discovery", does not seem to reflect the theme, which tied the original attractions together, either.
The real reason for Discoveryland my boy, is that in the contract with the French Government a certain percentage (loose interpretation) of the park's content had to be based on French or European Culture.

Is a shiny new future in store for DLP's Discoveryland? - Talk Disney Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
I called Discoveryland a “distinctly European take on the Tomorrowland concept.” Perhaps I should apologise, as that statement is not strictly true; Discoveryland has surprisingly little in common with its American and Japanese predecessors, and is unique in its theme and concept.
It was never designed as a vision of the future, or even the “future that never was” but rather as a sort of World’s Fair, celebrating scientific and literary vision through the ages.
Earlier this year, Le Visionarium (exported as Timekeeper to the sister resorts) closed its doors for the last time after it was found that not enough guests were visiting the attraction to merit its operational costs.

Discoveryland in Disneyland Resort Paris is deigned to reflect a pre 20th century feel, with that edge of being ‘advanced and futuristic’.
