Discworld MUD is based on the exciting and wonderful humourous fantasy books by Terry Pratchett.
Discworld also has the best cabbages and frogs of any mud, even the wombles are happier on Discworld.
Like everybody involved in mudding I have the usual collection of friends all over the place [and a credit card suffering from too many airline tickets] but the best thing I've got out of being involved with Discworld's administration is the dealing with people aspect.

Discworld MUD is a free Multi-User Dungeon set in the Discworld as depicted in the Discworld series of books by Terry Pratchett.
The MUD was founded in 1990 and opened to the public in 1992.

The position of Wommon in MUDs is at least as bad as Wommon in our society, however on a MUD they can hide their sex and thereby rise to positions they would not normally have been able to achieve.
An interesting experiment is to log into a mud (it generally helps if the MUD has quite a few people on-line) as both a female and as a male character.

It's also an alignment based mud, but even though I killed a whole bunch of what I would think of as 'good' NPCs, I never strayed from neutral, making me wonder what needs to be done to manipulate your alignment.
To say that Discworld is 'unique' might be going too far, but it's as close to unique that any mud I've been on has ever been.
Discworld does not pretend to be what it isn't, and in fact almost *under* sells itself.

I love the mud, but as a player, not as someone on a power trip who deludes himself into thinking he does a fantastic job and that anyone who disagrees has to be insane.
The muds like any other orginisation, where people are human and they take part in empire building and petty abuse of power, how on earth can you think the mud is any better.
To be honest I think the mud is worse, and is full of socialy maladjusted people who cant live in the real world and therefore play out their social fantasies and egos on the mud.

Mud clients can have various features; The most useful being a separate input window so that the text you are typing doesn't scroll off the screen and the abiltiy to scroll back and see what just happened when the text races by.
Be warned Discworld MUD has rules against playing more than one character on Discworld at the same time.
But for many muds I believe that this feature would be a significant enough bonus to make one want to learn to use this program.

It's really thanks to the Discworld MUD that I started to meet other people who knew what Wombles are and became inspired to create these pages.

Since I started playing the mud back in 1993 I have come to have 2 great loves within the mud itself, these being the Thieves Guild and the City of Ankh-Morpork.

I have loved the music from the Discworld Noir game for ages and am trying to find out if I can find the musical score for some of the pieces (if there is one).
You should think of HP fans as Discworld fans in potentia, since they get a good glimpse to the world of fantasy in Harry Potter, and may continue to look for similar books by other authors, and thus find the Discworld.
