Topic: Disestablishment

Church in Wales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The opposition to disestablishment was led by the Liberal Party politician F.E. Smith, who characterized the effort as "a Bill which has shocked the conscience of every Christian community in Europe." In response to this overwrought description, the Catholic intellectual G.K. Chesterton penned the vicious satirical poem, "Antichrist, or the Reunion of Christendom: An Ode."
The Act both disestablished and disendowed the "Church in Wales", the term used to define the part of the Church of England which was to be separated.
Disestablishment meant the end of the Church's special legal status and Welsh bishops were no longer entitled to sit in the House of Lords as "Lords Spiritual".

In Wales at Disestablishment, the law of marriage was left unchanged: as a priest of the Church in Wales, I remain in exactly this position, still involved with banns and quarterly returns.
Disestablished the Church in Wales might be, but we are told that "the law of the land recognises the right (my emphasis) of parishioners, even the unbaptised, to be married, with certain specified exceptions, in their parish church."
But unless the Church of England were to meet the prospect of disestablishment with clear Biblical principles and a sound theological mind, the benefits and opportunities would be lost and the new relationship between church and society thereby established could be confused and positively unhelpful to Christian witness and evangelism.

The state and religion in Britain.
The privileged position enjoyed by the Church of England and the way in which this infringed the religious liberty of non-anglicans, caused the established church to come under attack from early radicals such as Tom Paine, whose works undoubtedly influenced the architects of the American Revolution and the drafters of the US constitution.
By the mid-nineteenth century the cause of disestablishment was on the agenda of the reformist Chartist movement and also that of the 'Radical Programme' of Liberal Party members.
Disestablishment is supported by most British religious leaders outside of the Church of England, the Libertarian Alliance and even by the Christian Socialist Movement, of which the Prime Minister himself is a prominent member.

Some official recognition of the appointment would be required, and the stringency of the qualifications, both as to education and character, would render any abuse of this kind of patronage impossible.
The revenues now devoted to episcopal and cathedral establishments have not been reckoned as sources of increased rectorial incomes, although, whatever system of supervision might be adopted, it is probable that a considerable surplus from these revenues would remain.
It may, perhaps, be further objected, that the country could not supply six or seven thousand men of the requisite ability and character, in addition to the clergy of the disestablished Church, who would continue in existence as an independent body.

Simon Barrow - Disestablishment and Monarchy
This loyalty to the Gospel, I would suggest, is what is mainly at stake from a practical, theological point of view in the debate about dis/establishment.
This is the intellectual equivalent of a suffocating pastoral embrace -- the sympathetic but patronising 'there, there' of the public school chaplain as he lovingly warns the errant child against his -- almost always his -- rebellious tendencies.
This is why the question of dis/establishment is so important: it makes the churches face up to the fact that we need fresh ways of relating to power that support demanding truth-telling in public life.

Establishment and Disestablishment at the Founding, Part I: Establishment of Religion - Questia Online Library   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
This Article is an attempt to describe the actual laws and debates over establishment and disestablishment in the United States, in the hope that a more thorough understanding of the issue faced by early Americans will help to foster a richer, and perhaps less brittle and bipolar, understanding of the issues we face today.
It will set forth the principal (and competing) rationales for disestablishment, provide a legal history of the process of disestablishment in the early American states, and discuss in greater detail the more controversial issues that faced the founding generation as it moved toward disestablishment of religion.
At the time of the Founding, the period roughly from the beginnings of the Revolution through the formative years of the new Republic, the Church of England was the established church of the mother country, as it had been for centuries.

None of this means that disestablishment is a panacea.
As part of the ecumenical reconsideration of church-state relations that would surely be entailed by disestablishment, that voice needs to be heard again.
For me, as an Anglican influenced both by the radical Catholic tradition and by the Mennonites, disestablishment is fundamentally about the end of Christendom as a way of doing church and the final unweaving of the Constantinian settlement.
