Gamer's Logik 4.0 - Disgaea: The Hour of Darkness Review
Disgaea simply oozes style, anime style that is, and if you're a fan of anime then you'll love the humor and overall story of Disgaea.
Disgaea's graphics are not really noteworthy, they are not spectacular in a Xenosaga type of way, but they are crisp and well animated.
The Dark Assembly is the part of Disgaea that controls many things that are indirectly related, from the creation of your army to the stocking of the item store in your castle to the quality of the units you create (the highest quality units require approval).

Review - Disgaea: Hour of Darkness // PlayStation 2 /// Eurogamer
Since you're not only egotistical and obnoxious, but also a Prince of the Netherworld, you decide that it's obvious who should be in charge, and set forth from your castle to restore the rightful demon (you) to the throne by means of the traditional "beat the crap out of everyone who disagrees with you" method.
In Disgaea, they're wilful and deliberate, and they form a core part of what it is that makes this game so special.
Indeed, if there was ever a game that defined the concept of a niche title, Disgaea would be it - and for that alone, and the sheer inaccessibility of the title to players new to the genre, we can't give this game a ten, much as it deserves it in almost every other way.

 Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories :: PlayStation 2 :: Review :: DreamStation.cc
Disgaea 2 loses that unique edge of being the bad guy, and instead puts you in control of a kid with the mentality of a 10 year old and who is intent on being a hero.
Disgaea is a turn by turn RPG, meaning that you'll spend a turn moving all of your characters and making your attacks/actions, then after you end your turn the computer will do the same.
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories provides a lot of depth inside of a game which is largely a copy of its original, just removing the great storytelling and incredible characters.

Disgaea follows the adventures of Laharl, a demon prince residing in the Netherworld.
Some maps in Disgaea contain geo panels, which are represented as squares on the floor of the map of a particular color.
The style of Disgaea's visuals is very similar to the Super Robot Wars series, as the makers of Disgaea have responded that characters represented by 3-D models in other games are often limited by a "set pattern of motions", and they were able to make the characters of Disgaea more expressive with sprites.

As the game starts, one of your loyal vassals (at this time, you have a whole one of those) is trying to wake you from a long slumber...you've been sleeping for the last 2 years, and thus missed the news of your father's demise.
Last of all, the humans of Disgaea are seen as ignorant and power hungry, without enough common sense to ensure their own survival.
Disgaea brought me back into a genre that I thought SquareEnix had forever pushed me away from with their pile of shit known as FFTA; the strategy RPG.

 RPGamer > Staff Review > Disgaea 2
Disgaea 2 is centered around Adell, a heroic youth, and Rozalin, the spoiled daughter of the powerful overlord Zenon.
The menus have improved a bit since Disgaea, and are fine in most places, but they leave a little to be desired when trying to organize a few dozen troops and a few hundred pieces of equipment, each of which possesses its own unique residents.
Though none of the components that make up Disgaea 2 are especially spectacular on their own, they fit together very nicely along with interesting assembly and item customization systems and a fairly unique sense of humor to create a largely enjoyable experience.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness - GameCritics.com
Sure, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness isn't evil in that horror film way—there are no monsters that pop out of your TV set like in The Ring or The Video Dead, nor will watching it lead to you getting strange phone calls and dying within seven days.

Disgaea was NIS’ first American release, and put its own special spin on the strategy RPG genre.
As is typical for the genre, there is a character creation system, but in Disgaea 2 you must choose a character in your party to be the new character’s master, and when the student gains a level the student’s master will receive bonus points as well.

DailyGame Review: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness [PS2]
Fans of the genre tend to be compulsive in their devotion to it, and have no qualms about investing dozens of hours into leveling up their characters in the quest to capture one more item, learn one more spell or defeat just one more boss.
Teamwork in Disgaea is all about positioning, as the more powerful the ally you position alongside your attacking character, the more powerful your character’s attack can become.
Disgaea packs a ton of gameplay into a deceptively simple looking package, and being someone who values gameplay over everything, I really can’t say enough good things about it.

The music for Disgaea is excellent, and widely varied, with pieces ranging from classical and operatic to cheesy sentai to techno, and yet there was never an official soundtrack release for the game.
This was easier in Disgaea than some other games I've worked with because the music on the game's DVD ran a few seconds into the second loop before abruptly fading out, giving me more room to work with.

RPGFan Reviews - Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
During the interim, cousin titles to the Disgaea universe, such as Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom, were released; but for some reason, they just did not seem to impress the hardcore 2D RPG fans the same way that Disgaea did.
See, even from the start, this is what makes NIS titles like Disgaea 2 so different: they openly and willingly break the fourth wall, willingly mocking the sort of hackneyed story you've explored over and over in countless role-playing games.
The main graphical attraction with Disgaea is, of course, the anime-style characters and backgrounds.

Unlike Hour of Darkness, however, where players stepped into the role of Laharl, crown prince of the netherworld, controlling his team of demons in an attempt to take the place over, this time you'll be playing a good guy.
Although that always has the potential to make some players feel like they're covering familiar ground, it's tough to argue with the 100 hours of gameplay the title is promising.

"Disgaea: Hour of Darkness," brought to us by the tiny-yet-reliable Atlus, is such a game.
This would be cheesy in another game, but "Disgaea" is balanced with such odd tactics in mind, so you need to think creatively to succeed in the later challenges.
There are PSOne games that look better than "Disgaea." Despite the solid character designs and over-the-top attacks, the game looks horribly dated.
