Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories follows the adventures of a young man named Adell, the last human being in the world who remains untainted by the curse of a powerful demon, Overlord Zenon, that is slowly transforming all the other humans into demons.
As the main character, you meet, interact with and gather to your side various allies in small story sequences, while filling out your ranks at a home base by creating/summoning/binding (whatever the term du jour is) more generic characters selected from an ever-expanding roster of classes and races.
Probably the best-designed characters in the game are actually Adell's parents, who look silly and well put together all at once, and seem to have been designed around their personalities to some extent.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memory: PS2 Review
Disgaea 2 brings back everything found in the first one with minor additions and a new story to keep you entertained for hours.
Originally, Disgaea 2 was planned to be a direct sequel of the events and characters of the first one.
Characters also have the ability to pick each other up and toss them, important for situations where you might need to eliminate a certain enemy or get rid of a Geo Symbol.

RPGFan Reviews - Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
During the interim, cousin titles to the Disgaea universe, such as Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom, were released; but for some reason, they just did not seem to impress the hardcore 2D RPG fans the same way that Disgaea did.
The drawback with Disgaea 2 is definitely in the graphics department.
The character sprites are given a fair amount of attention in the form of animation (NIS makes sure to have those pixelated breasts bouncing every time a grown woman moves); however, the quality of the sprites, in pure terms of resolution, makes this a mediocre achievement.

Disgaea's storyline, which unfolds using a combination of 2D artwork, text, and voice-overs, is overflowing with absurdly goofy Japanese humor, some of which is actually really funny.
Disgaea is structured as a series of chapters, each containing a sequence of battles.
You don't need to worry about such things as your characters' initiative relative to their foes, there are only three types of elemental magic and corresponding resistances, and with the right equipment, you don't need to worry about running out of spell points.

Combo attacks - multiple characters striking a single target, simultaneously - are possible, and it not only depends on how physically close the allies are, but their stat-based 'personality' ratings to one another.
Aside from that, it's possible to simply move an enemy character to a certain spot, for instance, if you've got a spellcaster who is trying to strike several targets with an area-of-effect blast, another character can pick up a stray enemy and toss it into the spellcaster's target zone.
Disgaea has a very smooth learning curve and is very accessible to newcomers to the genre: my wife had little RPG experience and no strategy RPG chops, but she was able to jump right in and enjoy Disgaea with a minimum of fuss and frustration.

 Review: Disgaea 2 (PS2) | lawrence.com
Since you can always move a character back to their original position unless you have them perform an action, it is possible to keep positioning characters for combo attacks and then undoing their move after the attack is executed.
Each character has a unique job class that they level up in, and as they do, they gain new abilities unique to their chosen job.
The characters are all rendered in simplistic 2-D, but their artistic design makes up for their technological limitations.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness followed the rise of Laharl as he battled to be become Overlord of the Netherworld.
Disgaea fans will also notice that animations for certain magic attacks have been toned down somewhat to what they were in Disgaea.
Personally I preferred the characters in Disgaea to those in Disgaea 2 but with the tweaks that have been made it’s fair to say that Disgaea 2 is the better experience.

Your characters, much like Chess pieces, can move a fixed number of places to engage the enemy with short- and long-range attacks.
You can stack your characters in towers and then toss them, one by one, across the board in order to reach places you can't normally get to in one turn.
Disgaea's visuals are heavily anime-influenced, so you'll be getting more than a fair share of large eyes and impossibly-proportioned bodies.

Barbelith Underground > Games & Gameplay > Nippon Ichi - Disgaea and others
In Disgaea, characters learn new weapon skills the longer they use a specific type of weapon - each character has a gauge for each weapon type which fills up as they execute attacks with those weapons and they learn a new attack when that gauge reaches a certain level.
You then have to decide whether having the character learn the skill is worth losing an item that may be granting a large bonus to the character's health, speed, defence, etc., when they're equipped with it.
Disgaea's far more elegant, probably as a result of its revolution being built upon years of small alterations and additions to the regular SRPG formula, rather than a total rewrite.

Add to that all the enemies in the game are playable characters as well, and that the game has NEW GAME + feature, you have perfection in a bag.

For starters, the main character in the game is a teenage demon by the name of Laharl whose sidekick Edna is a young demoness who seems to be constantly ridiculing Laharl and maybe even plotting behind his back.
The story for Disgaea is funny and doesn't make sense at times, but I think that may have been a plan of the developers from the beginning.

What made these characters a bit more interesting is oddly enough is the fact that each of them have their own unique personality and background history that the story actually takes the time to develop them.
The beauty of these characters is that just when you think there isn't anything there, the story surprises you with a little bit of a twist.
With so many characters to choose from and monsters to convert, you want to be able to use as many fighters as possible but in the end, you'll end up pretty much only using the story characters as your fighters.

The story of Disgaea 2 is similar to first one, in that it is highly character driven and told with quite a bit of humor.

Initially drawn in by the quirky humour, excellent characters and the simple yet deep battle system, players found themselves grinding away, finishing sub quests and levelling up their team mates to the maximum, with total play times heading into hundreds of hours long after the storyline quest had been finished.
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories has a story only very loosely connected to that of the original game, set in the same universe but a self-contained tale, giving newcomers a fresh starting point.
Disgaea 2 is just as good as the original game and this is mainly to do with the fact it is practically a remake, only with a few tweaks here and there.

Disgaea 2 may have a relatively deep storyline, but the presentation is lighthearted at best.
Characters have no compunction with sniping at each other and being disrespectful, both behind each others’ back and to their faces.
Disgaea 2 adds one complication to this system: some of the symbols have creatures underneath that move them, so setting up a chain won’t necessarily be a leisurely affair.

Disgaea 2 incorporates some of the same features it did in the original to retain its "Do anything & try everything" heritage while making radical innovations that include suggestions from game fans.
The game has a great animated opening sequence, and the character models are great during dialogue, but in combat, the models and stages are pretty average.
The dialogue between characters is at times ridiculous and clearly exploiting the clichés of the genre.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories is the follow-up, and attempts to do the same thing with a new story, new characters and a few refinements to the grid-based gameplay of the original title.
Alongside characters that propel the plot, your army can include Warriors, Archers, Ninja and Knights, plus every type of monster in the game from Prinnys to Orcs to Holy Dragons.
Advanced mechanics include having one character create another as an apprentice, which passes along some power to the master, and reincarnation, which lets battle-hardened characters start over from level 1 with beefed up skills and stats.

Disgaea is exemplary in its execution of the strategy genre, so it should come as no surprise that La Pucelle exhibits an excellent gameplay engine.
Compared to Disgaea the game plays a bit on the slower side and any time the player attacks the view changes to an up close, side-scrolling view that was more than a bit irritating after awhile.
Disgaea and La Pucelle had different artists so while La Pucelle still adheres to the anime asthetic, the characters are a bit boring by comparison, and a bit sugarcoated.

There’s a segment of gamers that just love manipulating their units (*snicker*) on a grid-based battlefield, leveling up their characters until they have the ultimate warrior, and unearthing the most ridiculously powerful weapons in all the land.
The story is filled all kinds of wacky characters like a haughty frog with split personalities and a washed up celebrity demon that currently hosts a travel show.
Characters often break through the fourth wall, acknowledging demons of high level or that Adell gets all the attention because he’s the main character or that it’s too early in the game for Adell to face Zenon because he hasn’t leveled up enough.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories has been years in the making and after all that time Laharl and Flonne have been thrown to the side in lieu of a new story with Adell and Rozalin.
Lifting characters is another important tactic since in some battlefield you’re forced to lift and throw party members to put them in range to attack.
Even though there is a new cast of characters, Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories retains the sense of humor that the original game is loved for and adds in even more depth than the original game.
