Disintegration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was the first Cure album to be specifically recorded for CD and this is the reason that the vinyl release is without the songs "Last Dance" and "Homesick".
In 2002, the current Cure at the time performed all three albums in their entirety to a Berlin audience, and it was released on DVD as Trilogy in 2003.
The album was certified gold by the RIAA on June 28, 1989.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Disintegration
Disintegration is the mother, father, granddaddy and grand-nanny of albums whose feelings have lost their ways in search for their heart's ultimate desires.
An album that starts off with a song like "Plainsong," which kicks off the album more like it is ending it, needs a lot of patience and heartache to go through the healing journey of Disintegration.
Disintegration, probably Cure's best, has the finest love songs in rock: love seems even more special when it is burdened with the pangs of longing and aching.

“Disintegration” like those two records, Smith admitted, were served to be “farewell” albums by the Cure as if they wanted to go away on top and on “Disintegration”, they did that except they didn’t breakup as Smith claimed they would do after the album and tour.
“Disintegration” not only feature four of the band’s best singles but also some rich album tracks ranging from eight to nine minutes that explored the band’s ominous sound of brooding bass and guitar hooks and eerie synthesizer that are followed by Robert Smith’s gloomy lyrics.
“Disintegration” was probably best said in an episode of the cartoon show “South Park” where Robert Smith defeated Barbara Streisand to save the world as little Kyle Brofloski said, “’Disintegration’ is the best album ever” as it is total proof that the Cure has made a lasting impact in rock n’ roll history.

Although 'Disintegration' is far more listenable, the two albums do represent The Cure's career peaks; you can certainly ignore everything that came after them and most of what was in between (ahem).
In fact if the album had been recorded without his vocals, just with a lyric sheet to read while listening to the instrumental versions, I'd have given it four and a half stars (if Amazon allowed half-stars).
Well theyre not wrong, this album is nothing short of pure genious and has redefined my definition of what in fact pure genious is. Every track is unique and has a quite personalised touch to it, bringing out the emotion in the listening, great work on keyboards and keyboards throughout especially.

 Album Review: Disintegration
A concept album only in the barest, starkest, broadest possible sense - the disintegration one finds oneself gaping at with an ambulance chaser's enthusiasm is - quite naturally for a Cure album - that of Robert Smith's own relationships.
A disintegration, furthermore that comes across to the outsider as so complete, so painful, so ignobling, one Is left fearing f or Smith's present state of mind.
Disintegration remains a mindblowing and stunningly complete album without the two extra tracks - Homesick and Last Dance available on the CD and Cassette, (Both are worryingly superfluous so don't be conned).

It is certainly a unique album, exploring a bleaker and more destructive side of relationships whilst at the same time remaining a very accessable.
Although a more difficult album to appreciate than say 'The Head on the Door' it does have its fair share of highlights; the singles 'Love Song' 'Lullaby' and 'Fascination Street' are some of the Cure's most recognisable songs.
You have to appreciate an album that, at 71 minutes in length, doesn't have a moment of filler in it.

The whole mood of the album is so fine-glued together and when you play Prayers for rain, you get the impression that Robert Smith was going though a hard time in 1989 (when the album came out, actually).
This album is like a fine "wintercoat" which you can wear and will protect you from the, sometimes, "bad world" around you.
It's also an album you don't 'share' with others than yourself if you will keep it personal, because all the songs are so very private.

Supposedly this album was going to be a double album with one side light and the other side dark.
Perhaps it is unfamiliarity with the album (only listened to it twice so far), or perhaps it is my own high expectations of what the Cure are capable of, but my own personal opinion is that this is a rather weak album.

But with all of that said, "Disintegration" is always hopeful, always "up." The Cure revels in their downtrodden and bleak view of life but they do it with a wink, a knowing smile and not a smirk; which pretty much says it all in regards to them and their music.
few albums drum up the raw emotions we all feel inside quite like 'disintegration.' it was an interesting blend of peddled-guitars, tinny bass, spooky synths, and robert smith's trademark yalps.
in short, 'disintegration' is indeed the cure's defining moment, much like 'violator' was depeche mode's, 'the innocents,' was erasure's, 'earth sun moon' was love and rocket's, and 'technique' was new order's.

The title turns out to be as ironic as a story by Saki--this is the most confident and accomplished Cure album yet.
Disintegration sifts through the findings and synthesizes the elements that have made the English band one of the most entrancing of the '80s: The focus of the earlier, darkness-drenched LPs is merged with the greater musical/lyrical/mood dimensions of the later ones.
The greatest thing about Disintegration is its sound--a gorgeous fabric of rumbling bass, cathedral organ, swirling chimes, rain effects, Arabian Nights rhythms, and several styles of guitar--all supporting some of Smith's most probing and poetic lyrics yet.

And though the album is relentlessly depressing, with lines like “it doesn’t matter if we all die” and songs about animals dying ("The Hanging Garden"), the music is often both coldly beautiful and surprisingly hard rocking, led by Smith’s naggingly insistent guitar playing (heard to best effect on “One Hundred Years”).
And it is their weakest album in some time; though its upbeat cadences and varied musical textures are definitely different, the album lacks any truly great songs and suffers from a schizophrenic identity.
Although the album as a whole is uncharacteristically upbeat, lines like “but I’m still not sure what’s going on, and I can’t help feeling something’s wrong” and “I’m sick of it all” show that Smith hasn’t quite mastered this happiness thing just yet, which is generally a good thing where his music is concerned.

However, the songs on Disintegration differ in one big way: the new album has a much slower tempo, as the band has come up with a more reserved sound to accompany Robert Smith, who had previously been the core of The Cure's albums.
The album opens with the simply titled "Plainsong," an addictive number that highlights keyboardist Roger O'Donnell, the newest member of the band (formerly of the Psychedelic Furs).
The album kicks into high gear for the up tempo "Lovesong," a tune which -- true to its name -- is a simple song of eternal devotion.

Most people might look at the Cure,a British band that has sold a few million albums and now plays to throngs in stadiums and large arenas, and say this is undeniably a successful,big-time outfit.
After years of minimal airplay here, the British band saw its 1986 album "Standing on a Beach," a retrospective collection of singles, earn a gold record in the States.A followup album in 1987,"Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me," ultimately went platinum here, and a U. tour that year found the band booked almost exclusively into cow-palace-size venues.
Nevertheless,Smith maintained at the time that the band would never reach "huge proportions." "The popularity of the group has actually gone beyond what I imagined it would," he remarked in a 1987 conversation.
