If you have a system that is showing signs of disk trouble (for example, it's unbootable and the console is full of disk error messages) it can be handy to have a version of smartmontools that can be run off of a bootable CD or floppy to examine the disk's SMART data and run self-tests.
If the disk were able to read that sector of data, even once, then the disk firmware would mark the sector as 'bad' and then allocate a spare sectors to replace it.
Disks with uncorrectable sectors can often be repaired by using the disk manufaturer's 'disk evaluation and repair' utility (see previous FAQ entry).
