Emsa Disk Check: CD/DVD/HDD Disk Diagnostics Utility
Emsa Disk Check is a dual-purpose utility, for disk checking (prescan and full disk reading) and also benchmarking.
What it does, is scanning/reading the entire contents of a disk (CD, DVD or hard drive; or even floppy) and show any read errors that may appear, but also show drive speed information, progress statistics etc. It was designed with simplicity in mind, but usefulness for the user.
Tip: You may want to try reinserting a disk and performing more than one check, for more accurate results of benchmarking, as different reads of same disk may be performed at different speeds by the same drive.

 Repair Disk Utility's Permissions
The reason for this is that Apple has changed the way Disk Utility works in order to prevent this catch-22 situation from occurring in the first place.
The Disk Utility executable handles most of the superficial things, such as when you resize the main window, or navigate through the menu commands.
Disk Utility Agent is the part of Disk Utility that handles the actual verification and repair of your disk, and verification and repair of the permissions of your disk, and so it therefore requires root-level privileges.

After launching Disk Utility, the application opens to display a list of your disk resources in a pane on the left side of the window, as shown in Figure 3.56.
Disk images have become a common and convenient way to distribute software for Mac OS X. Rather than create an archived folder, developers write their applications to a virtual disk that is loaded into memory when used.
Although most options for Disk Utility are found in the toolbar or via controls in the various panes, two additional features are located in the File menu.

PowerMax: I love Disk Utility   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
My favorite Apple application is an often-overlooked program called "Disk Utility." Found in the "Utilities" folder located inside the "Applications" folder, it has been included in every version of Mac OS X. As OS X has advanced, so has Disk Utility; becoming much more than the hard drive formatting application it used to be.
All of those things are great features, but with Disk Utility 10.4 there is a world of additional features far more useful than just maintaining a hard drive.
Disk Utility is only one of the jewels found in the "Utilities" folder.
