Topic: Disk controller

Disk array controller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, a disk array controller is a computer hardware device which provides secondary storage services to computer systems, often in large servers.
It is the critical component of a disk array.
A disk array controller usually attaches to a number of disk drives in disk enclosures which are organised into RAID sets or groups for data protection and performance reasons.

 Disk Controller
The disk controller does not know that it is now talking to a new disk drive, and the head position of the new disk drive may be different from the old one.
As soon as the controller tries to execute any read or write command, it will notice that the data coming from the disk drive is claiming track 23, instead of the 10 it expected.
Signals are named from the perspective of the 1793 disk controller chip, so "input" means input to that chip from either the computer or the disk drive, and "output" means an output from the 1793 to one of those.

Because the HD disks need double the magnetic field strength for recording, you should not attempt to format a 1.2M HD disk as though it were a 360K disk, or a 360K disk as though it were a 1.2M HD disk.
Their controllers have been fixed to allow the RWC signal to be sent to the drive even when the controller is sending the 250KHz data rate.
The 3 1/2-inch disks are covered by a more rigid jacket than are the 5 1/4-inch disks; the disks within the jackets, however, are virtually identical except, of course, for the size.

Using hard disk controller caching with SQL Server
If the cache controller never fails to write to disk what has been entrusted to it (even if the keyboard sticks, the operating system crashes, or the hard disk crashes), there will be no problem.
On the other hand, if the disk controller delays the writing of some SQL Server log data and chooses to physically apply other log data (because of the "elevator" sorting) and fails to write the rest of it for some reason, SQL Server has no way of knowing that some of the log is missing.
If the disk controller does not allow selective write-through, the only alternative is to make frequent backups and never rely on warm start or rolling the transaction log forward.

 Wesley's PIC Pages: IDE Controller
When a disk is connected as an IDE device the PC-AT still 'sees' the old-type control registers of the ancient MFM disk controller.
When a control signal is inverted the 8255 pin is connected to one of the inputs of the 74HC04 and the (corresponding) output of the 74HC04 is connected to the IDE bus connector.
The output of the inverter is connected to the controller's /IRQ input.

Hard Disk Drive Guide - What is an IDE Hard Disk Drive
Prior to these drives, hard disks were interfaced to a PC motherboard via an expansion board known as a hard disk controller.
In most cases when a computer says it has a problem with the hard disk controller, it has a problem with the electronics on the drive.
Subsequently, the IDE Controller expansion board electronics and the connector for the drive cable were incorporated into most motherboards.

Storage Disk Drive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
As a drive reads a signal from the disk drive platter, the preamplifier is used to amplify minute analog signals before they are sent to a read-channel IC for digitization.
The hard disk controller manages the job of transferring data between the DRIVE and host during read and write operations.
SoCs integrate the functionality of the read channel, hard disk controller, servo logic, microprocessor and memory on a single piece of silicon.  Originally developed for the desktop PC segment, the cost/power/performance benefits of SoC designs have broadened their use into enterprise, mobile PC and fixed/portable consumer electronics applications.

 LOAD disk driver
Since most controllers can be configured more than one way, you must specify parameters for the controller each time you load a disk driver.
If the controller can have two hard disks cabled to it, make sure that disk 0 is cabled and addressed as disk 0 and that it is terminated.
Disk 1 needs to be cabled and addressed as disk 1, but it should not be terminated.

Disk controller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The disk controller (or "hard disk controller") is the circuit which allows the CPU to communicate with a hard disk, floppy disk or other kind of disk drive.
The most common disk controllers in use are IDE and SCSI controllers.
High end PCs, workstations and network file servers mostly have SCSI adaptors.

It used a DMA device interfaced to a floppy disk controller for sector transfers.
In order to synchronize the CPU with the variable response of the disk drive, a simple I/O locking mechanism was implemented, by utilizing the S-100 lines connected to the CPU chip READY or WAIT control pin.
Except for the execution of a brief routine that prepared the DMA for a disk transfer, there was no other disk I/O overhead for the CPU to perform.

SST Introduces Stand-Alone ATA Flash Disk Controller For Embedded Mass Data Storage Market   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The controller can be easily integrated into a customer's processor board for space savings or be combined with flash media devices to create any specialty embedded memory module.
The controller manages the interface between the industry standard ATA bus and flash media, eliminating the complexities and associated overhead of writing specialized firmware to support functions such as bad-block management, error correction and flash media wear leveling, which are required in order to achieve reliable data storage operation.
The controller's internal flash memory is factory preprogrammed with Embedded Flash File System firmware, which recognizes the external flash media upon power-up and performs all the necessary "handshaking" routines for media support.

One of the enabling technologies significant to the disk drive industry was the integrated disk controller, which brought disk drives to desktop systems in the early '80s.
We were just building chips at the time, and then a customer said: "We need a reference platform to show us how to integrate your chips onto boards." So we supplied them with a reference platform.
We basically had that chip and then we had the floppy disk controller as well.
