Disk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In biology, an intervertebral disc is a cartilaginous joint between vertebrae in the spine of vertebrate animals.
In mathematics, a disk is a geometrical object.
Disc came into the English language in the mid-17th century, from the Latin discus, and like already-existing words like whisc or risc, it was spelled with c; disk arose some time later, and was based on the original Greek root diskus.

A disk or disc is anything that resembles a flattened cylinder in shape.
Disk came into the English language in the mid-17th century, and was modelled on words such as whisk; disc arose some time later, and was based on the original Latin root discus.
In the 19th century, disc became the conventional spelling for audio recordings made on a flat plate, such as the gramophone record; this usage gave rise to the modern term disc jockey.

Compact disc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Compact disc technology was later adapted for use as a data storage device, known as a CD-ROM.
Compact discs are made from a 1.2 mm thick disc of polycarbonate plastic coated with a much thinner layer of super purity aluminium (or rarely, gold, used for its data longevity, such as in some limited-edition audiophile CDs) which is protected by a film of lacquer.
Consequently, discs are much easier to ruin by scratching their label side, whereas clear-side scratches can be repaired by refilling them with plastic of similar index of refraction.

A disk refers to magnetic media, such as a floppy disk or the disk in a hard drive or iPod.
Disks are always rewritable unless intentionally locked or write-protected.
Although both discs and disks are circular, disks are usually sealed inside a metal or plastic casing (often a disk and its enclosing mechanism are collectively known as a "hard drive").

Both disc and disk were used interchangeably into the 20th century, with people in Britain tending to use disc more often, and Americans preferring disk.
Late in the 19th century, for reasons that are not clear, people used disc to refer to the new method of making phonograph recordings on a flat plate (as opposed to Edison's cylindrical drum).

Most general publications have adopted the standard that disk is correct in all circumstances, but allow that many people also use the variant disc.
Further confusion is introduced by the orthographic preference in British English for disc over disk as a general rule with the sole exception of floppies and hard disks which are written disk because of the influence of American English.
Disk and disc both come to English from the French disque (spelled with a -que, no less!) so there is no etymological reason to prefer one or the other.

Center for Neurological Disorders - The Spine - Herniated Disc
There are many different terms to describe spinal disc pathology, and all are used differently by different healthcare practitioners.
It should be kept in mind that all the terms – herniated disc, bulging disk, slipped disk, ruptured disc, etc. – refer to radiographic findings seen on a CT scan or MRI scan (x-rays can indicate disc degeneration but cannot actually image the disc itself).
While radiographic findings are important, they are not as meaningful in determining the source of the pain (the clinical diagnosis) as the patient’s specific symptoms and the spine specialist’s findings on physical exam.

It's a British vs American english thing, because hard disks were invented in America (IBM) while the compact disc was invented in Europe (Philips).
Yeah a floppy disk must be with a "k" since it's square not round and disk short for diskette.
A couple of people have said "disk as in diskette" now, but I always thought that a 5.25" was a "disk" and a 3.5" was a "diskette", which would imply that diskette was derived from "smaller disk".
