S manage swapping between main memory and disk when the main memory is too small to hold all the processes.
Swapping Swapping consists of bringing in the main memory each process in its entirety, running it for a while, then putting it back on the disk.
Algorithms to allocate memory for a newly created process (or an existing process being swapped in from disk) when the processes and holes are kept on a list sorted by addresses: S first fit.

Emuforums.com - View Single Post - crazy disk swapping
Everytimes i play those games like max payne or return to the castle wolfenstein, i will have a very serious disk swapping problem.
Mo matter what i do in the games, like walking, shooting, opening door, looking around with the camera, turning left, turning right, etc, i noticed that my hard disk will become very busy, seems like it was doing a very heavy disk swapping.
I suspect i set the setting to too high until my com cant support, but it seems not true,I have tried to set everything to minimun setting, like 640x480,16bit color, no fsaa, but still cant solve the problem.

This is the average length of the swap queue during the interval.
Disk operations are the slowest of all operations that must be completed to enable most programs to complete.
For example, for a given disk operation to be completed successfully, the disk controller must be directed to access the information from the proper part of the disk.

This swap file is created as a hidden system file to avoid accidental deletion and will not be visible with a normal DIR command.
Swapping to a RAM disk will generally be faster than swapping to a hard disk.
(Disk swapping will not be included as part of the default if the boot drive is A: or B:, because floppy disk swapping is too slow to be useful on most systems.) After 4DOS starts, you can use the SWAPPING command to view the type of swapping in use.

Generally, swapping to a dedicated partition (raw swap) is somewhat faster than swapping to a local or NFS file.
However, since the swapping goes through the file system, it is not quite as fast as raw swapping to a dedicated partition.
The buffer memory caches blocks from the disk, and the blocks that are used frequently stay in the cache.

Swapping differs from paging in that when paging occurs, only unused portions of a process are sent to disk.
The purpose of the disk capacity script is to return the used and total disk space on a given file system, through the use of the "df —k" command.
Disk activity is also monitored by the percentage of time the disk is busy, which indicates when the disk is in use, versus the percentage of time the disk is waiting with transactions in the disk queue.

 F99: CREU Research Group
Network swapping systems allow individual cluster nodes with over-committed memory to use the idle memory of remote nodes as their backing store, and to swap their pages over the network.
Network swapping is motivated by two observations: first, network speeds are getting faster more quickly than are disk speeds, and this disparity is likely to grow [3]; second, there is often a significant amount of idle memory space in a cluster that can be used for storing remotely swapped pages [1, 2, 4].
We tested our system against swapping to disk, mirroring, and the original Nswap algorithm without reliability using three workloads designed to test both cases when disk swapping is expected to perform well and when disk swapping is expected to perform poorly.

 Reviews: After-Market Floppy Disk Drives
If your ST has only one disk drive then you've experienced the frustration that comes with copying disk files- the constant disk swapping when you want to copy even one file can be maddening.
After a printer I have found that an external floppy disk drive is the most important peripheral to have.
I usually don't find this out until I attempt to save something on the disk I thought I formatted, and then get a message that the disk "may be damaged." (PCM is aware of the problem, however and has corrected it.) I experienced no trouble formatting single-sided disks.

The balloon driver will force the VM to swap which can could potential lower the performance of the VM since it is slower then RAM.
It increases disk IO since it basically forces the VM to begin to swap via disk.
The resultant performance impact on the VMs that are forced to swap will likely be benign, however this may vary based on OS and workload.

Disks 30, 53, and 55 are three database disks that are being pounded with updates from the application through the relational database system.
Perhaps the arrangement of data on the disk is not organized properly (a condition known as fragmentation) or perhaps the organization is fine but the disproportionate access of sd3 (see the blks/s column) is bogging it down in comparison to the other drives.

Maybe it can also be used to quick-select disk slots with cursor keys (or any other keys) after pressing short cut key.

Disk swapping occurs when the computer uses the hard drive to temporarily store the excessive memory that an application takes up, often at the cost of speed and system stability.
In order to minimize the amount of disk swapping, one can buy more physical memory.
With 16 MB, there is a lot less disk swapping, therefore increased speed.

Since I have an 8088 system and a hard disk and don't have EMS memory, my comments, of course, will emphasize that type of system, but the setup is basically the same for an 80286 system.
The only real difference is that, with my system, 4DOS swaps itself on and off of the hard disk instead of in and out of EMS memory.
First, the "/s:dc:\4dos" part is what sets up disk swapping and tells the system to put the disk-swapping file (a hidden file) in the 4DOS directory.

 LWN: 2.6 swapping behavior
If application memory is occasionally forced to disk, the unused parts will remain there, and that much physical memory will be freed for more useful contents.
Without swapping application memory to disk and seeing what gets faulted back in, it is almost impossible to figure out which pages are not really needed.
But it wouldn't just be program memory getting swapped back in; it would be clever to pull into cache files and directories that get used a lot, so that (for example), your Mozilla cache would be in memory again when you got up.

It's a new disk- it needs fdisk, and divvy and even though Tom is right about SCSI disks not needing badtrk, I run a quick scan anyway because if this disk is a total piece of crap, I want to know it NOW before I waste more time on it.
However, when you got to the divvy part, it should have been blank.
If it was NOT blank (which seems to be the implication here) then you either were NOT looking at the proper disk or your system is very very confused.

There's no doubt that disk swapping is not a user friendly exercise in the world of HTPC, but to just watch the disk from start to finish -- the success ratio is much better.

On my system, the second hit of Play the disk always starts with a default "locked AR" rather than the one I have stored for that DVD.
