  Walt Disney
Disney was not the first to animate cartoons: the mechanism had been established as long ago as the late 19th century, and had been used extensively since then, mainly as a commercial tool to boost the content of feature films.
Disney had the additional insight to realise that the sound, now played on separate equipment, had to be recorded onto the film itself if any kind of convincing result was to be guaranteed.
Old Yeller was a Disney film in which things did not end happily: the book had its origins in 1869 and became a best seller: it describes the life of a young boy whose dog is bitten by a rabid wolf.

The surviving "Nine Old Men" (Frank Thomas, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston and Ward Kimball) were going to animate scenes for the upcoming "Fantasia" sequel.
It was quite a lot of work: after all, the storyline was that all the Disney princesses all had babies by the Disney heroes, and Donald Duck was set to deliver a stack of crowns to the babes, but all the Disney villains were conspiring to wreck the whole affair.
The Nine Old Men idea was probably a last ditch effort by Eisner to not suffer an embarrassing defeat of his idea.

Among the Disney figurines produced in this century, undoubtedly the Lenci Thumper represents one of the highest points of a non-American three-dimensional representation of a Disney character.
The source clearly appears to be a drawing of Thumper (as published in "Illusion of Life" by Thomas and Johnston, page 27), penciled by one of the "nine old men", legendary animator Frank Thomas.
Other characters taken from the Disney feature films and produced by Lenci are Pinocchio (item #1334, 19 cm high, walking and holding school books with one hand and an apple with the other) and a gorgeous Dumbo (item #1262, walking too, with his hat on top of his head, 27 cm long).
