Wired News: Disney Animates Dalí's Flick
The remnants of the aborted film include 150 storyboards, drawings and paintings, which have sat for the last half-century in the Disney vaults.
The effect, said film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, is a blend of '40s Disney kitsch and pure Dalí, with an overlay of contemporary sensibility.
Dalí spent his time at the Disney studio painting, drawing and discussing with Hench the challenges of adding motion to what he described as his "hand-colored photographs." The project continued for eight months, and was abandoned in 1947 when the Disney studio ran into financial problems.

Ever since Walt Disney first synched up scorpions to square-dancing music, nature documentaries have provided a dependable fix for both filmmakers and audiences looking to balance cutesy with the occasional feeding frenzy.
A shame, really, since many of the critters caught here on film (including some ludicrously huge shoals of feeder fish, a veritable dolphin fleet, and a few trench-dwelling beasties freaky enough to make Cthulhu turn tail) really are something to see on the big screen.

Debuting director Breck Eisner (son of Disney head honcho Michael) may lack the crackerjack pizzazz of a Cameron or Spielberg, but his action scenes feature a coherence often missing in the Bruckheimer age of films; shockingly, it is often possible to tell where characters are in relation to each other and who's shooting at whom.
Ultimately, the film's act of mild stoner genre subversion may never blossom into, say, what The Big Lebowski did to the detective story, yet the muzzy-headed playfulness makes the copious testosterone heroics much easier to keep down.

I don't care what the subject is, but one of the general rules of filmmaking is that the more a director feels he/she has to tiptoe around the material in a film, or the more he's being pressured by nervous nellies, the more likely it is that the film will have a cottonball kid-gloves quality.
