Topic: Dispatch table

Dispatch table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer science, a dispatch table is a list of pointers to the actual implementation of each method.
Use of such a table is a common technique when implementing late binding in object-oriented programming.
This table is called a virtual table or vtable.

Virtual method table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A virtual method table, virtual function table, dispatch table, or vtable, is a mechanism used in programming languages to support dynamic polymorphism, i.e., run-time method binding.
The dispatch table is the same for all objects belonging to the same class, and is therefore typically shared between them.
Vtables only allow for single dispatch on the special "this" parameter, in contrast to multiple dispatch (as in CLOS or Dylan), where the types of all parameters can be taken into account in dispatching.

In an EQL dispatch step, the hash table is associated with the generic function and the key is one of the arguments.
An old mapping table can be used when a closure of a function internal to a method captures the mapping table, the class is redefined, and then the closure is called and accesses a slot.
Marking the old instance information, dispatch table, and mapping tables obsolete ensures that the next operation on an obsolete instance of the class traps and updates the instance, changing the header to refer to a new slot vector and to the up to date instance information.

Retrieves the highest priority function in table that is associated with a type specifier that matches object.
The function is chosen by finding all of the type specifiers in table that match the object and selecting the highest priority function associated with any of these type specifiers.
If table is nil, retrieval is done in the initial pprint dispatch table.

This dispatch stub fetches a pointer to the currently context's dispatch table, looks up a pointer to the desired function in that table, and, finally, calls the function.
Once the location of the function pointer in the dispatch table is known, Mesa generates a dynamic dispatch stub for the function.
The name of the dispatch table pointer is changed in the TLS case to prevent conflicts between a TLS libGL and a non-TLS DRI driver.

Message dispatch: given a target object and a message selector (method name), find the implementation of the method to call.

The tables could be compacted and then the compact representations could be joined into a single table.

Method and arrangement for dispatching messages between instance specific dispatch tables of objects, when a particular object does not have resident the method called for execution in response to a message directed toward it.
The message is according dispatched to another instance specific dispatch table associated with an object which may be able to execute the method called for by the message initially transmitted.
Upward chaining between instance, class, and superclass level dispatch tables, and method supercalls canceling the effect of method overriding by instance level methods are included in the method and arrangement.

 Dispatch -- Recommendations and Resources
A dispatcher works at a central station, sends out personnel in response to inquiries from the public, usually through a telephone or radio, and coordinates communications, relaying messages as needed.
Multiple dispatch or multimethods is the feature of some object-oriented programming languages in which a function or method can be specialized on the type of more than one of its arguments.
single dispatch, object-oriented programming languages, when you invoke a method ("send a message" in Smalltalk, "call a member function" in C++) one of its arguments is treated specially and used to determine which of the(potentially many) methods of that name is to be applied.

RedHanded » Minimizing Row Displacement Dispatch Tables
For implementing Dynamic Dispatch, the technique that uses the dispatch table like Virtual Table(VTABLE) of C++ is often used in statically-typed language.
When compressing the table, though it is usually splitted by class, this report recommends to split by selector.
When a class is added, it deals by using two or more dispatch tables (fall-back the 2nd table by method_missing).

Another common use for double dispatch is in drag-and-drop applications, where the result of a user action depends on both the data object dragged and on the target object.
If a dispatcher has not been instantiated, and the just-loaded class is uni-dispatch only, we defer the registration in order to reduce the overhead to uni-dispatch programs.
In a series of micro-benchmarks, we showed that our prototype implementation adds no performance overhead to dispatch if only uni-dispatch is used (Table 2) and the overhead of multi-dispatch can be competitive with explicit double dispatch (Table 4).

Our solution is to keep a vector of // candiate offsets in each interface (the ioffsets table), and // in each class we have an index (the iindex) used to select the // correct offset from ioffsets.
That imples that all the ioffsets table have to have the same length: That of the largest CLASS_IINDEX.
