Chapter 1. Introductory. 1. The Diverging Streams of English. Mencken, H.L. 1921. The American Language
This doctrine, of course, is not supported by the known laws of language, nor has it prevented the large divergences that we shall presently examine, but all the same it has worked steadily toward a highly artificial formalism, and as steadily against the investigation of the actual national speech.
Thus the study of the language he is supposed to use, to the average American, takes on a sort of bilingual character.
But inasmuch as this obviously differs from American English, the American pedagogues remain faithful to the grammarians of the era before phonology became a science, and imitate them in most of their absurdities.

 Webster Language
It has been observed by all writers, on the English language, that the orthography or spelling of words is very irregular; the same letters often representing different sounds, and the same sounds often expressed by different letters.
The English tongue, tho later in its progress towards perfection, has attained to a considerable degree of purity, strength and elegance, and been employed, by an active and scientific nation, to record almost all the events and discoveries of ancient and modem times.
Compare this prospect, which is not visionary, with the state of the English language in Europe, almost confined to an Island and to a few millions of people; then let reason and reputation decide, how far America should be dependent on a transatlantic nation, for her standard and improvements in language.

Culture & Society - How Global will the English Language Remain?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
English has gained that position by virtue of being the second language in over 70 of the 191 UN member nations, the chief foreign language in more than 100 countries and the preponderant forum for politics, trade, technology and higher education.
Standard English and the local ‘Englishes’ are like two parallel tracks, two railway lines, the users of the latter keep coming back to the core language in international communication, even as they use dynamic varieties of English with new words, sentences, grammar, rhythms and rhetoric in their local context.
Although English is global in reach, it is not the sole cause for the demise of weaker languages.

 Connecticut's Heritage Gateway
In 1783 he published the first volume of A Grammatical Institute of the English Language, later known popularly as the "Blue-Backed Speller." He conceived it as a demonstration of his fervent belief in liberty and cultural independence for the United States and his desire for uniformity in speech and language.
During the 1780s he wrote and lectured widely on the need for a powerful central government and an increased sense of nationalism, believing that only a strong union could insure liberty.
His dictionary definitions had clarity, reflected American as well as English forms, and his final one had nonliterary words as well as Americanisms.

IUB Libraries: Introduction to the Bibliography
Dissertations of this type have been excluded, since the inclusion of every dissertation dealing with certain authors or genres would have expanded this bibliography far beyond its intended purpose.
This is followed by the title of the dissertation, then by the full name of the degree-granting institution (standardized for the purposed of this bibliography).
Rather, the dissertation title is simply displayed in a database field tagged as "title." Therefore, in order to create entries in which each dissertation title was set off by quotation marks, the ProCite MLA output style program was used to automatically generate these marks.

 Language Policy -- English Only
English Plus seems to appeal mainly to language educators, advocates of ethnic pluralism, and speakers of other languages — in other words, to the minority of Americans who already value bilingualism.
Language shift is especially acute in Native American communities, where about one-third of indigenous tongues have disappeared since the coming of Columbus.
When immigrants are limited in English, they must rely entirely on the heritage language to pass on values, advice, and traditions to their children.

Linguistics and English Language - what is Linguistics?
Language structure includes grammar, of the sort you've probably learned at school, but it's not just about nouns and verbs and so on, Linguistic research has shown that speakers of a language are sensitive to many facts about their language's structure, even though they may not be aware of them consciously.
Any speaker of English could tell you that 'Velar fricatives only occur in codas' is English (even though it has some strange words in it), whereas there's something seriously un-English about 'Lamb a little had Mary' (even though the words are all perfectly ordinary).
Social variation in language is relevant to the social sciences, and 'Sociolinguistics' is a recognised interdisciplinary field.

AdBriefing Articles: The British and Americans Are Divided by a Common Language. But Why?
Today, the English language is used by some 800 million people worldwide, with barely half of those speaking it as a mother tongue.
This is because the English language is arguably the richest in vocabulary.
This, combined with a later work, Dissertations on the English Language, a volume that was fanatical in its arguments for divorcing American English from its parent, set the fundamental seal of approval on the new American English.

Children of the Code - Background Research Notes: Noah Webster
According to one recent estimate, "there are some four to five thousand languages in the world but only about 140 nation-states." Much as their governments might claim, or wish otherwise, all the world's nations are multilingual to one degree or another.
And the idea that languages define nations-that how we speak and write and even spell is a necessary marker of our national character-is an assumption or really an invention that many people now take for granted but that first became commonplace and assumed special prominence during Noah Webster's lifetime.
They might continue to speak different dialects and even different languages, but the fiction of linguistic uniformity made the fiction of nationhood easier to swallow: the French are French because they speak French.
