  DME (Distance Measuring Equipment)
Distance measuring equipment (DME), used by many pilots because of its convenience during flight, consists of airborne and ground equipment usually co-located.
The DME operates in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band and therefore is restricted to line-of-sight transmission.
The DME hold function retains the frequency of the original VORTAC station on the DME while the pilot channels the VOR receiver to another frequency.

The mileage readout is the direct distance from the aircraft to the DME ground facility and is commonly referred to as slant-range distance.
The difference between a measured distance on the surface and the DME slant-range distance is known as slant-range error and is smallest at low altitude and long range.
Lightweight DME equipment is reported by manufacturers to be accurate within plus or minus one-half mile or three percent of the distance, whichever is greater.

By ground measuring of the slant range from at least two, preferably three or even more ground stations the position of the aircraft can be calculated by means of a computer fed with the at least two slant range measurements and the altitude of the aircraft.
The Trilateration Three-Way DME (TTW-DME) is an extension of the TW-DME.
There is calculated from the measured slant ranges and the altitude h of the aircraft 30 transmitted to at least one of the transponders the position of said aircraft in the computer located in the ATC center.

Video processor for distance measuring equipment - Patent 4124850
DME is intended to provide a continuous indication to an aircraft pilot of the slant range between his aircraft and a particular ground station.
The DME aboard the aircraft transmits on a particular frequency an interrogation signal consisting of a pair of pulses having a particular spacing.
The DME determines the distance to the responser by measuring the time elapsing between the initiation of an interrogating signal and reception of a reply from the responser.

There was no electronic equipment (DMEs) at all so we got to “chain” distances between stations using a 100 meter steel tape.
The DME devices were big boxes crammed with electronics with parabolic domes on the front of them.
DMEs could measure up to maybe 20 Ks (kilometers) but the recommended maximum distance was 15 Ks.

The laser distance meter is also much safer in that you can stay on the ground and shoot the laser beam up to to the high object you want to measure, rather than climbing up and hanging measuring tapes from high places.
Circular objects like large diameter hvac ducts are still difficult to measure when they are high up but at least I can get on either side of the duct and shoot the laser from a known reference point and subtract the laser measurement device distances form the known distance to get my duct diameter.

Distance Measuring Equipment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is a transponder-based radio navigation technology that measures distance by timing the propagation delay of VHF or UHF radio signals.
DME is similar to Secondary Radar, except in reverse.
DME identity is 1350 Hz to differentiate itself from the 1020 Hz tone of the VOR or the ILS localizer.

The main purpose of the DME is to display to the pilot a distance from a VOR or localizer.
DME too has an indent and it will be the same as the VOR or localizer you are tuned to.
The DME audio is transmitted at a frequency of 1350 hertz and the nav audio is transmitted at 1020 hertz.

A brief history of the development of the distance measuring equipment, which also formed the basis for an IEEE National Aerospace Electronics Conference luncheon address, is given.
While originally planned for the 1700-mHz band, it was hoped to add DME to it a year later (this was done) and it was therefore agreed by all concerned that it made sense to put it in the 960-1215 mHz band and use the same channeling scheme already developed for Wright Field.

However, if, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind-speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional functions are actually used.
