The distillery is located down slope from the millrace of Mount Vernon plantation's gristmill (built in 1771 and reconstructed in the 1930s).
The 75-by-30-foot distillery was among the largest structures of its kind in the eighteenth century.
George Washington's death in 1799 halted the brief success of the distillery and within a decade the building fell into disrepair and many of the stones were taken away to use in local construction projects.

It is a dramatic location at the foot of a steep hill with the distillery signalling the begining of the village, which spreads round a broad bay.

 UISGE! Oban Distillery: All about it
The distillery at Oban was founded in 1794 by the local Stevenson brothers who had been involved to some degree in the creation of the fishing port of Tobermory on Mull.
The distillery was revived in 1818 and run by the Stevensons until the 1850s.
Worm condensers are now quite rare in Scottish distilleries and the rectangular double worm-tub at Oban may well be unique.

The distillery was unearthed January to March 2001, by archaeologists employed by the City of Albany Parking Authority.
The distillery remains at Quackenbush Square are such that the stone foundation walls, about 30 ‘ X 80’, can be preserved, readily, just as they are, with little or no mortaring.
Actually, there was historic documentation available, all along, indicating the potential for 18th century distillery remains at this location, but this wasn’t resorted to, by the parties involved, until a few weeks ago.

 UISGE! Talisker Distillery: All about it
Within sight of the famous Cuillin Mountains, Talisker distillery sits in the lee of its own hill on the shore of Loch Harport, the buildings pristine white between the vivid green of the slope behind and the slate-blue of the loch water lapping below.
Today the malt is peated elsewhere to Talisker’s specification, which lies somewhere between the lightness of the Highland malt whiskies on the mainland to the east, and the heaviness of the Islay malts to the south.
There used to be a waterwheel to supplement steam-engine power and in the 1920s the distillery was lit by acetylene gas lamps.

 Locke's Distillery, Kilbeggan, Ireland
Locke's Distillery is the only small pot still whiskey distillery remaining in Ireland, the only examples of what used to be a widespread Irish industry.
Locke's Distillery was licensed in 1757 and produced whiskey for over 200 years, closing in 1953.
In 1982 the local community began restoring the distillery and have re-opened it as a museum.

The distillery was founded by the Rate brothers.
In 1853 the Rate brothers were bankrupted and the buildings of the distillery lay empty, being primarily used as a cowshed.
Glenkinchie was bought and has remained in operation under the license of John Haig & Co. The distillery has always maintained its close associations with local agriculture, and its farm was for many years managed by the distillery manager W. Macpherson, who was nationally acclaimed for his championship herd of Aberdeen Angus Cattle.

 Talisker, Scottish Malt Whisky
Talisker is the only distillery on the Isle of Skye, and takes its name from a farm some miles away nearer the village of Carbost.
After the brothers' deaths the distillery was eventually acquired by a partnership between Grigor Allan, Procurator Fiscal of Morayshire, and Roderick Kemp, a wine and spirits merchant, and substantial sums of money were invested in rebuilding and refitting the distillery.
The distillery was partly rebuilt in 1960 after a fire and its own floor maltings were demolished in 1972.

Long a tradition at the Bomberger Distillery was the Jug House where local farmers and tradesmen came on market day to fill their jugs from barrels lining the walls of this historic building.

The IRS confiscated the still in 1940 from a bootlegger in Fairfax County, Virginia, and oral history suggests it is one of the five owned and used by George Washington at his distillery.
