The Distinguished Flying Cross, was authorized by an Act of Congress of July 2, 1926, an act amended by Executive Order 7786 on January 8, 1938.
It is a bronze cross pattee, with rays between the arms of the cross.
Subsequent awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross are indicated by oak leaf clusters, for Army and Air Force personnel, and by award stars for members of the Naval services.

World War Two flying ace Wing Commander Adrian Warburton DSO DFC has finally been laid to rest nearly 60 years after he went missing on a reconnaissance sortie over southern Germany in 1944.
On completing flying training, he served with a torpedo-bomber squadron in the UK, before being posted to Malta in 1940, as one of a small number of RAF aircrew tasked with flying reconnaissance sorties over the Mediterranean.
Warburton was the pilot of one of two Lockheed F-5B photographic reconnaissance aircraft (a version of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter) that took off together from Mount Farm on the morning of 12th April 1944 to photograph targets in Germany.
