Fred was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (USA), and Al earned a Distinguished Flying Cross (USA), a Distinguished Service Cross (USA), an Air Medal, a Distinguished Service Cross (UK) and seven Bronze Star Medals for participating in combat.
They both had distinguished careers--Al remained in the Air Force until his retirement in 1960 at the rank of full Colonel and Fred ran the Key Brothers Flying Service at Key Field until his death in 1971.
The cutoff valve developed for the Keys by A.D. Hunter was an important innovation for national defense, being the precursor of those used by modern tanker airplanes, such as the KC-135 Stratotanker, that keep bomber and fighter aircraft in the air.

The Distinguished Service Cross is a military decoration awarded to personnel of the Royal Navy (United Kingdom) and other services, and formerly also to officers of other Commonwealth countries, for gallant or distinguished conduct during enemy actions at sea.
The award was originally created in 1901 as the Conspicuous Service Cross, but was renamed the Distinguished Service Cross in October 1914 and could be granted to all naval commissioned officers and Warrant Officers below the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "DSC".

Retired actinomycete biologist Emeritus Professor Tom Cross, aged 70, was known internationally for his work in isolating and characterising new actinomycete strains especially those that produce potentially useful drugs such as antibiotics, while working in the University's Department of Biomedical Sciences.
The funeral service, led by Harry Gooch, was held at Rawdon Crematorium, on October 12, and was attended by family, friends and colleagues.
Professor Cross was President of the Society for Applied Bacteriology from 1974 to 1976 and was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Biology in 1981.
