Distributary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The opposite of a distributary is a tributary.
Distributaries usually occur as a stream nears a lake or the ocean, but they can occur inland as well, such as in an endorheic basin, or when a tributary stream bifurcates as it nears its confluence with a larger stream.
The IJssel, the Waal and the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine) are the three principal distributaries of the Rhine.

The distributary complex facies is characterized by a predominance of sandstone and trough-cross stratification which is typically unidirectional.
From a distance, this facies is often characterized by the complex geometry of bedsets and large-scale bounding surfaces in contrast to the flat to very gently inclined surfaces of the lower delta-front.

The major distributaries of the Danube consist of three major channels, the St. George to the south, the Sulina in the middle, and the Kilia to the north (Almazov et al., 1963) [06-i01].
The Kilia distributary to the north is the youngest part of the delta.
Once the Kilia distributary became the dominant channel, wave reworking of the older distributaries resulted in the formation of transgressive beaches at these river mouths.

 Lower Delta Plain
It is typically a brackish to saline environment and is the scene of more active deposition, mostly by crevassing or overbanking from the deltaic distributaries, modified by the input of marine sediments from storms.
Distributaries are small, shifting channels that carry water away from the main river channel and distribute it over the surface of the delta.
The depth of the channel decreases rapidly as the river mouth bar is approached and water depth over most distributary mouth bars, that occur when the coarsest material is deposited at the mouth of the distributary, rarely exceeds 3 m.

Lobate and elongate distributaries have sand deposits in the distributary channels and as arcuate accumulations at the delta front, where the sand settles out of suspension when the river water confined in the distributary loses velocity as it enters deeper water (fig.
The delta-plain facies parallel elongate distributary channels and are more complex than the facies of a lobate delta but show a banded pattern of sediment that is progressively finer with increasing distance from the distributary channel.
In both types of distributaries, the axis of maximum sand thickness is located at the distributary channel.

The figure indicates that equity is not a major problem in the head and middle reaches while it is one in the tail-end distributaries, where 23 percent of the farmers in kharif and 61 percent in rabi reported "not fair" at present.
Farmer participation both in decision-making at scheme level and in operation and maintenance at the distributary level needs to be given the pre-eminent role, and detailed guidelines and mechanisms need to be put in position in the early stages of implementation itself.

The prograding distributary mouth bar sequence is the initial facies of the construction phase of delta building.
The distributary mouth bar is formed as the distributary channel enters the receiving basin and drops its sedimentary load at the mouth and flanks of the channel in the quieter waters of the basin, ultimately building to substantial thickness and forming the distributary mouth bar sand.
The interval from 3050 feet to the top of the distributary mouth bar (approximately 3580 ft) is composed of distributary channel sands and interdistributary bayfill beds and coals.

The blue patterns, which result from foreset bed deposition, dip in the direction of current flow (to the east-southeast) and the red patterns, which result from drape over the base of the channel, dip toward the scour channel axis (east-southeast).
The overlying yellow pattern could have a few causes, but is most likely a reworked distributary channel or mouth bar sands, since it is sandwiched between channel deposits.
In general, blue patterns dipping away from the channel axis indicate crevasse splays; blue patterns dipping parallel to channel strike are due to a distributary mouth bar.

The distributary channels are bordered by well-developed natural levees that are quite narrow, generally less than 250 m wide.

It had been pointed out that appropriate institutional reforms would be introduced in the water related sector in order to enlist the farmers’ participation in sharing the responsibility at the distributary level of the irrigation systems.
Thus a consultancy agreement was signed with IIMI to implement pilot projects in which water users organizations (WUOs) would be established to operate and maintain irrigation and drainage facilities in the distributary and minor command area.
The objective of this component was to provide the necessary insights on the organizational arrangements for farmers to interact with government agencies and effectively manage their resources.

The medial zone of the Mauna Ulu flow field (between the near-vent region and coastal plain) is considered to be predominantly composed of tube-fed pahoehoe emplaced as a series of large lobes with centralized, major feeder tubes.
These parts of the distributary system are small (up to a few meters in diameter), but appear to have transported significant volumes of lava given their lengths and the apparent volumes of associated breakouts and levee systems.
Identification and analysis of breakouts from the subsurface allow the complex patterns of overlapping surface units to be related to the distributary system, subsurface storage localities to be documented, and local flow stratigraphy to be interpreted.
