Database management system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
A database management system (DBMS) is a computer program (or more typically, a suite of them) designed to manage a database (a large set of structured data), and run operations on the data requested by numerous consumers.
As computers grew in capability this tradeoff became increasingly unnecessary and a number of general-purpose database systems emerged; by the mid-1960s there were a number of such systems in commercial use.
When the database was first opened, the program was handed back a link to the first record in the database, which also contained pointers to other pieces of data.

The distributed database management system is arranged to cooperatively execute in conjunction with the public switching system, and the management system includes three functional layers, namely, a database interface module, a data dictionary, and a database access module.
Database transaction control ensures that transactions spanning nodes are performed atomically, that is, completed or not-at-all, and it allows internal transactions working on replicates of data to be deferred.
For any database service, CTC 512 ensures that a user-defined sequence of read and update operations enveloped in a START.sub.-- TA/END.sub.-- TA pair transaction is performed in a consistent way, which means that such a transaction transfers the distributed database from one consistent state into another consistent state.

Glossary of Network Terms - PCNS
Distributed processing enables the most efficient use of processing power because available processors can be dynamically assigned as either general or job specific processors, depending on the type of work to be done and the existing work load.
Distributed processing also enables duplication and distribution of key services, such as directory services, so that full services remain available regardless of the failure of individual parts of the network.
Different operating systems have different conventions for naming files, but with multiple name space support, the name spaces supported on a volume are configurable so that each file on a given volume has a name that any workstation can recognize.

It is a database that is growing in importance since a lot of recent research on global climate change is available and the GCMD is one of the few organized efforts to create a system by which uniform storage, access and retrieval is being made possible.
The system was implemented using Java because RMI is tightly coupled with the Java language and Java is portable across various operating systems.
The objective of the new system (MD8) is to migrate the GCMD from client-server architecture to a federated architecture that is totally automated while providing sites participating in the IDN network with the autonomy necessary in maintaining their system.
