At the Organizational Meeting on December 6, 2005, Kevin Maves, Trustee for Niagara Falls, was elected Chair of the District School Board of Niagara.
The District School Board of Niagara has always welcomed the involvement of parents in our schools and is encouraged that the Ministry of Education is now formalizing that involvement through their new Parent Involvement Policy.

NIAGARA REGION, March 25, 2003 - The internationally acclaimed Roots of Empathy program continues to expand in Niagara with the addition of 20 classrooms, bringing to 47 the total number of classrooms receiving the program this fall.
Approximately 1200 Niagara students have already been involved in the program since its introduction to our classrooms in 2000/2001, with this most recent increase nearly doubling the capacity for involvement in the 2003/2004 school year.
At the heart of the school program is a neighbourhood family with an infant who visits a classroom once a month for the full school year.

The Library Board's plans this year include: the creation of further partnerships in education, including joint ventures with both school boards; the extension of the Project Contact program, renovations to a number of existing libraries and opening of some new branches; staff training in the use of the EPI-Pen; Peanut-Free Zones at all locations.
A recommendation to schedule one summer Board Meeting on August 28th, with July 24th to be held as a tentative date in the event that two summer meetings are required, was approved at the April 10, 2001 Regular Meeting of the Board.
Board Chair McDougald reported that she had written to MPPs Margaret Marland and Rob Samson to express the Board's concerns about the Government's proposal to issue tax credits to parents whose children attend private schools, and that she had asked them to respond before the legislation was passed.

Resolved, that the letter to the Chair from the Ottawa-Carleton DSB requesting that school boards join in demonstrating that an improvement in the funding of public education is necessary, be received.

Carruthers, the 53 year old school principal, decided that he would provide motivation for his students to become involved by walking to school from his home in near-by Niagara Falls, a distance of 12 km.
Carruthers announced that, to encourage everyone to take part, he would walk from his home in Niagara Falls to St. Christopher School on this day, a distance of 12 km, and that he was challenging staff, students and parents to meet him along his route and walk into the school with him.
Finally, having a School Board Trustee walk the 12 km with the group on this day was certainly innovative, in that it was an excellent connection between the school community and the political element of the Niagara Catholic District School Board.

Our school's principal is twinned with another local school and, in addition to her regular duties, she must spend recess caring for an autistic child whose teaching assistant was cut due to lack of funding.
As a former educational assistant in the Roman Catholic separate school system, it astonishes me that a large group of professionals is forced to take action against its employer at the expense of the public—all over a minimal difference in their demands and what they are offered.
The decision by the Board to lock out teachers who were willing to continue teaching their students on a rotating basis is a further indication of the contempt the Board has for its teachers.
