GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli tanks entered the eastern area of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and troops clashed with Palestinian fighters there, wounding at least three militants, witnesses and Palestinian sources said.
Earlier separate Israeli air strikes targeted houses in Jabalya, a district of Gaza City, in the northern part of the strip, and the southern Gaza town of Rafah, but there were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.
Gaza, a narrow coastal piece of land that is home to 1.4 million Palestinians, was occupied by Israeli troops until August last year, when soldiers and about 8,000 Jewish settlers pulled out after nearly 40 years of occupation.

Overnight, Israel carried out air strikes at houses in Jabalya, a district of Gaza City, in the northern part of the strip, and the southern Gaza town of Rafah after telling residents to leave their homes, witnesses said.

Israeli commentators said the fighting in Gaza was increasingly reminiscent of Israel's guerrilla war in Lebanon, which ended with Israel's withdrawal in 2000.
The operation in Gaza City was the largest since September 1996, when Israel sent hundreds of tanks and other vehicles into Gaza to put down riots that erupted after Israel opened a tunnel near holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem.
