 Strong waves kill over 70 dead in Andhra Pradesh
Over 70 deaths were reported in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh due to the strong tremors and resultant waves in the eastern coast, Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy said on Sunday evening.
Some of the victims had gone to take a holy dip in the sea on the eve of the full moon day in the Hindu holy month of Margasirsa, while others were drowned when they rushed out of their houses and huts after the earth shook.
District authorities took the help of the fire services, police, revenue, mandal and civic officials and personnel to provide relief and undertake rescue operations.

NEW DELHI, 6 June 2003 - Severe heat wave conditions in several coastal south districts of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining coastal districts of north Tamil Nadu since 20 May and interior parts of Orissa since 27 May are imperiling the lives of people in the region.
The maximum temperature recorded in Andhra Pradesh was 47.5 degree centigrade at Gannavaran in East Godavari district on 22 May 2003 while in Orissa it touched 48.1 degree centigrade at Titlagarh on 3 June 2003.
In Andhra Pradesh, more than 1300 people are reported to have lost their lives due to the severe heat wave.

The districts which were earlier found endemic to iodine deficiency namely Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Godavari, Khammam, Adilabad and Warrangal were found with adequate iodine nutriture as reflected by median UIE level of more than 100 µg/L. The study revealed success of salt iodisation program in the state.
The study was undertaken in all the 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh during the year 2001.
It was found that in the coastal districts of Nellore, Vishakhapatnam and Prakasam 80%, 76% and 83% of the population was consuming salt with less than 5 ppm of iodine, respectively.
