Heavy rainfall experienced in south interior, coastal Karnataka and Kodagu district has caused water level to rise in all major rivers and their tributaries in the catchment areas and due to release of excess water from a number of dams in Maharashtra and Karnataka 11 districts has been affected.
The Dams in Maharashtra have reached warning level are Koyana, Kopergaon Pauni, Jaikwadi the dam authorities have opened the gates to let excess water flow into neighbouring dams in Karnataka state.

Mumbai/Pune, July 30: With the intensity of rains lessening on Sunday and the water-discharge from various dams in Western Maharashtra is being reduced gradually, the scenario in the flood-affected districts of Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli has begun improving.
Even as Army had to be roped in for rescue operations in Satara and Sangli districts, the situation is under control in all the flood-affected districts, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said in Nashik.
District Collector Subbarao Patil said that if the rains let up, people can return to their homes by tomorrow afternoon.

Karnataka was on Friday directed by the Centre to release 6,00,000 cusecs of water from the Almatti dam on the State’s border with Andhra Pradesh to reduce the floods in southern districts of Maharashtra.
Maharashtra had earlier complained that Karnataka’s refusal to release excess water from the Almatti dam was causing flooding in the districts of Sangli and Kolhapur, in the Krishna river basin.
Maharashtra government sources said they are being forced to release on an average 90,000 cusecs of water from Koyna dam due to heavy rainfall and overflowing.

Several houses in Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra were damaged when an earthquake of moderate intensity jolted many parts of Maharashtra and Goa early on Tuesday.
The tremor, measuring an average of 5.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre at Warna in the quake-prone Koyna dam region in Satara district, was felt around 0602 hours, Met sources said in Bombay.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh took stock of the situation and has put the government machinery on alert.

The affected districts in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have been experiencing flash flooding due to unprecedented rise in water level of river wainganga, a tributary of Godavari and release of excess water from Sanjay Sarovar dam in Bhandara District.
The overflowing water from the dam caused River Wainganga to flow at a rising trend affecting districts (Bhandara, Gondia and Nagpur in Maharashtra) located down stream of the river.
Also the neighbouring districts: Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh and Rajnandgaon in Chattishgarh, situated along the river wainganga course have affected 60 villages approximate 150,000 persons.

Maharashtra government is planning to provide air connectivity between all districts in the state with a 40-seater regional aircraft service due to the rapid development in the civil aviation sector in the country.
Currently, there are 24 air strips in the state and the Maharashtra airport development corporation is doing a feasibility study for development of these air strips and other potential sites in the state, minister of state for Urban Development Rajesh Tope said.
According to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, this figure is set to rise upto 2,000 aircraft by 2010 with an investment potential of USD 60 billion.

With a view to alleviate the sufferings of debt stressed families of farmers in the six affected districts of Vidarbha in Maharashtra, a sum of Rs 50 Lakhs each which would be placed at the disposal of respective District Collectors.
It is estimated that around Rs 1296 crore of overdue loan amount as on June 30 2006 in the identified districts of Vidarbha in Maharashtra will be restructured/rescheduled under the debt relief package for farmers in distress or farmers in arrears.
In the identified six districts of Maharashtra 1.59 lakh hectare will be brought under assured irrigation facilities at a cost of Rs 2177 crore over a period of three years through completion of all major medium, minor irrigation projects.

Pune, July 29: Nearly 2.25 lakh persons in Maharashtra have been affected by a crippling fever, the state government said on Friday.
The fever, known as 'Chikungunya', has spread across 26 districts of Maharashtra, but the State Government is still not willing to declare it as an epidemic.
There are two districts, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, where there has been no incidence of the epidemic," Maharashtra's Health Minister Vimal Mundada said here.

According to a schedule announced by state Election Commissioner Yashwant Rajwade, the districts in which these elections will be held are Raigad (175 villages), Sangli (72), Pune (67), Ahmednagar (54), Kolhapur (48), Yavatmal (33), Satara (22), Wardha (9), Dhule (6), Jalgaon (5), Thane (4), Solapur (2), Amravati (2), and Nanded, Latur, Akola and Ratnagiri (one each).
The elections will be notified by the district collectors concerned on April 21.
The election code of conduct will remain in force from April 21 to May 27, 2003, in the jurisdiction of the village councils notified.
