Chennai, July 18 (IANS) All coastal districts in Tamil Nadu were on high alert Tuesday and thousands of fishing vessels did not go out to sea following a tsunami in Indonesia's Java island.
State Director General of Police D. Mukherjee said coastal police in all districts, including Chennai, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam that had faced the brunt of the December 2004 tsunami, were keeping a close watch on the situation.
However, the district collectors said no evacuations were being carried out as the authorities had assured that Monday's undersea quake of 6.8 on the Richter scale would not generate any large tsunami waves.
